Ok, this is our favorite Italian place that is close. Its decor is a throwback to the 80s (likely hasn't been changed since then) but it's quiet, close, and the food and service is good. Handmade rolls. Skip the Olive Garden and go here.

This is not quite a dive but very authentic. Been in business forever and you'll see all the locals here. Breakfast and lunch only. It was our kids' favorite place to go for a birthday breakfast. Traditional West Texas chow. The waitresses might call you "hon" and you can sit at the counter if the urge strikes. Very close. Take S. 14th east until you hit Butternut and then you've arrived at your destination. 5-7 minutes.

If you need some comfort chain-store food this is the closest Chick-fil-A to you. Brian LaCroix runs an excellent shop. Bonus: all four of our kids worked here. Don't let the lines dismay you. They move quickly.

Best place for a nice dinner. Make a reservation. Wear your cowboy boots. It's in Buffalo Gap so plan on a 15-20 minute drive and a fairly expensive dinner. Worth it, though.

This might seem an odd recommendation but the local HEB on the corner of Barrow and S. 14th makes fresh tortillas all day long and you can buy them while they are still warm: flour, butter, and corn styles. They are the perfect size, too, not massive. We often stop here and grab a couple of bags before lunch on Sunday, as appetizers.

If you have a group (4+) that wants to do an activity, this place is the best Escape House in Abilene. They have indoor and outdoor events and is incredibly well-planned and well-executed. Our family did this and our college kids all asked to return the next time we were all in town.
