The Cotswolds are characterised by attractive small towns and villages, built of the underlying Cotswold stone (a yellow oolitic limestone). In the Middle Ages the wool trade made the Cotswolds prosperous and some of this money was put into the building of churches, leaving the area with a number of large handsome Cotswold stone "wool churches". The area remains affluent, which has encouraged the establishment of many high quality pubs, restaurants and antique shops.

Bourton-on-the-Water is arguably one of the most popular villages of the Cotswolds, especially amongst overseas visitors. Having been nicknamed the "Venice of the Cotswolds", its scenery is the main draw for travellers. The River Windrush meanders through beautiful English countryside before passing over rapids next to the Old Mill and arriving at Bourton. The river is fed from many springs, with the source approximately ten miles from the village and, after flowing under the bridges of Bourton, it passes other villages before eventually joining the Thames. There are various attractions in the village, including the famous Birdland, which is home to a variety of birds from around the world. Here visitors can see parrots, pelicans, flamingos and penguins to name just a few, with experienced keepers feeding the birds and leading demonstrations. The Model Village is well worth a visit, as Bourton is the only village in the Cotswolds to have a one-ninth scale replica of itself. It is carefully maintained and has all of the characterful buildings including the Old Water Mill and the Old New Inn. Those lucky enough to witness snow in the winter months will notice photographers at the model village trying to get the perfect picture of the snowy scene. Another family favourite is the Dragonfly Maze. This yew maze leads visitors through the labyrinth, gathering clues in order to find the pavilion in the centre which enables them to unlock the final secret! The maze was constructed by Kit Williams, author of the golden hare treasure hunt book, "Masquerade". Food & Drink Bourton has a variety of places to eat and drink, including cafes, tea rooms, pubs and restaurants, with a range of prices to suit all budgets. The list below is a small sample of the options available: The Chester House Hotel and The Croft Restaurant (www.chesterhousehotel.com): Breakfast, morning coffee, lunches and evening meals in a riverside restaurant. You can enjoy freshly prepared, local produce throughout the day and night, with seasonal specials added to the menu daily. The Duke of Wellington (www.dukeofwellingtonbourton.co.uk): A local village inn aiming to provide fresh home cooked food with a friendly service. There is a light snacking menu, a full menu and a wonderful range of desserts and hot beverages. The Mousetrap Inn (www.mousetrap-inn.com): A traditionally run Cotswold stone Inn, with a history dating back to the building of the railways in the 18th Century. Serving home-made food, along with fantastic, locally brewed real ales. The Village Restaurant & Tearooms (www.thevillagerestaurant.co.uk): Traditional, home cooked food in a friendly atmosphere, overlooking the river Windrush, in the heart of Bourton-on-the-Water.

Set high up in the Cotswold Hills it has 400 acres of grassland in deep valleys and 100 acres of woodland and rolling arable fields. The farm has a mix of sheep, cattle and arable and has diversified with two horse livery yards and a holiday cottage business. In the last few years Harry and Diana have put in new foot and bridle paths and entered into a wildlife conservation scheme planting 200 acres of special plots planted with wild bird mixes, corn bunting mixes, pollen and nectar mixes for bees and beetle banks that promotes the preservation of our natural wild birds. The scenery changes with each season as does the pattern of farming; we have an abundance of lambs and calves in spring, harvest in summer, colourful autumn leaves and dramatic winters, often with snow.

As well as daily home cooked specials, on Sundays you can enjoy a traditional carvery with all the trimmings from 12-6pm.

Middle Gable The Old Hall is accessed via its garden, which leads to the beautiful wooden front door. Inside the house, a small entrance hall leads into: Living room: A grand room, which has been newly refurbished in a traditional style, enhancing the abundance of period features, including stone mullion windows, a large fireplace with wood-burning stove, wooden beams and a centuries old alcove. The refurbishment includes a limestone flagged floor, with underfloor heating, and the provision of a flat screen satellite TV and Blu-ray home theatre system with an iPod docking station. The living room then leads into the Inner Hall, which in turn leads to: Shower room: Contains a shower, basin and toilet; Kitchen/dining room: The kitchen is well equipped, including a cooker with hob, microwave, dishwasher, fridge, freezer and washer dryer. There is a good sized dining table, with five chairs, and the layout of the room ensures that all guests can socialise whilst cooking is in progress. Returning to the Inner Hall, a grand wooden staircase leads up to the first floor hallway, off which are: Bedroom 1: The initial highlight of the room is the spectacular super-king size four poster bed and this impressive room also has what is believed to be the original wooden flooring, stone mullion windows and the original “wig and gown” cupboard. The staircase then continues up into the gable of the house, giving access to: Bedroom 2: A very spacious, dual aspect eaves bedroom, with beautiful original wooden beams. The room contains three single beds, two of which can be pushed together and one of which doubles up as a sofa (it is a full size adult bed, however). Heading back downstairs and out of the front door, the lovingly cared for open plan gardens spread out in front of you. In Middle Gable The Old Hall’s garden, extending from the front of the house, there is a bench, for relaxing and looking out over all the gardens, as well as a paved seating area, which contains an outdoor table and chairs. At the end of the garden is a double garage for guest use.

A stylish open plan barn conversion, with gorgeous uninterrupted Cotswold countryside views. It's in a private setting, perfect for couples or solo visitors. Situated on the edge of a beautiful village, it's an ideal base for enjoying all the Cotswolds has to offer, including great walking and cycling, lovely country pubs and famous cultural/sporting events in nearby Cheltenham (@10 miles). Alternatively you can just relax, enjoy the scenery and do nothing at all.
We are perched on top of a hill on the edge of a beautiful and typical Cotswold village in an area of outstanding natural beauty. At the top of our driveway, tucked away from the main house, is our barn. If you are looking for something a little bit different but with a modern feel, gorgeous views of the surrounding countryside and privacy, then this will be for you. Our pool house was converted from a small stone barn and, as the name suggests, there is an outdoor pool and one side of the building looks out on to this (though it's only open June-August). The other side looks out on to uninterrupted views of magnificent rolling hills, complete with sheep, pheasants and birds of prey. Outdoor furniture is available. Inside it's a little non-conventional, and is open plan, with a mezzanine bedroom area that has a huge gable-end window and an 11-rung wall-fixed ladder to get you up to it. Up there is a low-level double bed and a cargo net that pulls across the mezzanine opening for extra safety, if needed. NB We are very sorry but this won't be suitable for anyone who cannot ably and confidently use a ladder to go both up and down. There is a separate toilet with a small hand basin and a walk-in overhead shower (please note no bath) with a connecting changing area where you can also store/hang things out of the way. The main room is open plan and has a kitchen area with an island and seating for 6. It's well equipped and includes gas hob, electric oven, fridge with small freezer box, dishwasher, microwave, toaster and kettle (no washing machine/dryer). There is a huge, very comfy corner sofa for relaxing and there's a TV with an Amazon Firestick with a small selection of channel apps including Netflix and Amazon Prime. It has under floor heating throughout. Please note we do not have curtains on the massive sliding doors on each side, however it is private where the barn is situated with no buildings overlooking it. There are removable blackouts that can be used on the gable-end window on the mezzanine/bedroom level, for those who prefer less light when sleeping. Outside there's a lovely deck and beyond the pool is a private garden area leading on to a paddock. Wifi works very well, mobile not very well at all, though you can hook-up to the wifi and use wifi calling, if you have it and that works perfectly.
Our area is very beautiful, very green, very quiet and very rural. This makes for a relaxing and peaceful stay. It's also super-dark at night as we have no street lights. If you are looking for night-life you'd have to go to Cheltenham (15 mins drive, cab possible with a bit of pre-planning). Please note you will have to drive to get to a pub or shop.

Not a modern house in sight! Just a clutch of pretty cottages, a medieval village square and church – a Cotswolds bubble of peace. The Guggle is quirky, there's a classic cottagey beamed sitting room with an inglenook fireplace, games, well-thumbed Penguins, sofas to relax on... it's a homely space for families. The hub is a light airy kitchen where you pull up a pew at an eight seater table; and look out to the west-facing enclosed cottage garden, perfect for for al fresco meals and run-around space for the kids. For a first night or treat, order locally cooked pies and crumbles: delicious. There are four pretty bedrooms. Up a spiral staircase (not suitable for the elderly or infirm) to the first floor there are two beamed bedrooms which share a shower room, upstairs to the second floor there is a beamed master bedroom with en suite bathroom, a further double bedroom room and en suite shower room is on the ground floor. You can stroll to the pubs and shops in the village, cycle along the Cotswold lanes, walk along beautiful pathways or drive to National Trust houses and gardens Chedworth Roman Villa, Sherborne Lodge.
The quirkiness of the cottage, it's very old c.1600 so expect low beams, spiral staircases (carpeted), exposed cotswold stone walls, and the unique Guggle room, a domed Cotswold stone room, with original 1700 wall painting.
One of the Cotswolds 'forgotten' towns, with lovely places to eat and drink, bakers, butchers and village shop

The river is fed from many springs, with the source approximately ten miles from the village and, after flowing under the bridges of Bourton, it passes other villages before eventually joining the Thames. here are various attractions in the village, including the famous Birdland, which is home to a variety of birds from around the world. For those keen to explore the surrounding villages, a circular walk following the Windrush and Gloucestershire Ways through to the villages of Upper and Lower Slaughter offers a gentle pace that totals 4 miles in distance; perfect for those not looking for anything too strenuous. More hard-core rambling fans should give the 9-mile circular trek from Bourton through Naunton and the Slaughters a go. Starting at Victoria Street’s Visitor Centre, this picturesque walk takes you through lush fields, chocolate-box villages and along the flowing River Windrush, with Naunton acting as a perfectly-placed pit-stop half way round to relax and refuel. Must-Sees Bourton-on-the-Water and its surrounds have a plethora of attractions to keep guests of all ages entertained, many of which are within walking distance of Forsythia Cottage. No visit to the village would be complete without a visit to the Cotswold Motoring Museum & Toy Collection (2-minute walk), perfect for kids and big kids alike, and home to children’s TV favourite Brum. The Model Village (5-minute walk) is also a must see, a perfect replica of the village built to 1/9th scale in traditional Cotswold stone, as is the wildlife-lovers’ paradise Birdland (8-minute walk) if you’ve got younger guests in tow. If you’re visiting in the summer, you may also be lucky enough to play witness to the village’s annual football match taking place entirely in the River Windrush; an August Bank Holiday favourite that sees visitors flock from miles around to cheer on their favourite team. Slightly further afield, Cotswold Farm Park (10-minute drive) is a firm favourite for families and animal lovers, as is Sudeley Castle (25-minute drive) in the historic town of Winchcombe. For adults in search of a peaceful day out, Burford Garden Centre (20-minute drive) is a shopping haven crammed full of luxury goodies, artisan gifts and beautiful plants to browse, as is Daylesford Farmshop & Café (15-minute drive); a famous farmshop with a distinctly luxury feel, owned by Lady Bamford.

Appletree Cottage is a sumptuously furnished, 3-bedroom (2 king-size doubles and 1 single), 18th century cottage at the heart of the popular Cotswold town of Bourton-on-the-Water. The cottage has been sensitively modernised with a fully equipped kitchen, ensuite shower room and downstairs family bathroom (with bath/shower). With a garden at the front and rear with a patio and outside seating, plus private off-road parking for up to three cars.
INTRODUCTION Appletree Cottage is the middle property of three, terraced, 18th Century Cotswold stone cottages, just a minute’s walk from the beautiful and bustling centre of Bourton-on-the-Water. The front entrance of the cottage is on Victoria Street, with the front door and porch framed by a rambling rose and ivy. To the rear, accessed via Bow Lane, is private parking leading to the back garden, patio and an entrance into the cottage through the kitchen. Perfectly located for easy access to the centre of this popular Cotswold village, yet away from the well-trodden tourist trail, Appletree Cottage is surrounded by some of Bourton-on-the-Water’s most attractive architecture. Guests can set out from the cottage’s door to explore a wonderful circular village walk, or head off into the surrounding countryside following the River Windrush and Gloucestershire Ways for four miles to the villages of Upper and Lower Slaughter. The cottage has been thoughtfully modernised, while preserving its 18th Century features, including an inglenook fireplaces, exposed beams and impressively thick walls. It is decorated in a style that perfectly suits its age, with a touch of opulence and Rococo style in its lighting, furniture and finishes. Perhaps one of the most famous locations in the Cotswolds, Bourton-on-the-Water is renowned for its pretty waterside views and quaint limestone buildings and bridges over the River Windrush, giving rise to the moniker ‘Little Venice' of the Cotswolds. Step out of Appletree Cottage’s front door, turn left and you are about 100 metres from Paynes Bridge, dated 1776. The village has so much to see and do, for all ages, you hardly need to go further afield during your stay to get a feel for the Cotswolds, from the Cotswold Distillery to the Motor Museum and Birdland. Light from the front of the house is reflected into the room by two, sculpted mirrors sitting on ornate tables with decorative lamps. Within the inglenook fireplace is a gas-fired woodburner-effect fireplace, which creates a lovely cosy atmosphere on a winter’s evening. A pretty window seat is the perfect place to sit and read, or while away the time watching the world pass by the front of the cottage – though not many of the village’s visitors do explore further than the High Street, yet they really should as this is where the architectural gems of the village can be found. Georgian features and character meet 21st Century in Appletree Cottage’s living room with a flat screen TV, with Sky and Freeview, a DVD player, Blu-Ray player and Pure Contour i1 Air wireless music speaker. The kitchen has all the appliances you need for a self-catering holiday, including electric hob and oven, microwave, dishwasher and fridge-freezer, plus all the crockery, glasses and cutlery for six guests. A pretty, half-paned door opens into the living room, and a second door next to the sink leads directly out to the patio and garden. A blue sideboard serves both as a pretty centrepiece as well as useful place to sit a cook book and store house equipment manuals, lightbulbs and other household items. Just off the kitchen is a large storage cupboard, housing cooking equipment and the washing machine/tumble dryer. Just next to the cupboard is the downstairs family bathroom. Family Bathroom The family bathroom is attractively decorated with white tiling, blue-grey panelling and terracotta floor tiles. It features a full-size bath with over-bath shower, toilet, sink, a heated towel rail and a large ornate mirror. Bedroom One The master bedroom features a king-size double bed and ensuite shower room with a large walk-in shower. This sumptuously decorated room overlooks the rear garden and is decorated in an inviting combination of white, greys and hints of purple. It features a tall button-back headboard over a king-size bed with fabulous Egyptian cotton bed linen, a large ornate mirror, bedside tables with large reading lamps and a double built-in wardrobe. Ensuite Shower Room Bedroom One’s ensuite shower room features a large walk-in power shower (small step up), toilet, sink with mirror, wood-effect flooring, plenty of space for personal toiletries, a heated towel rail and hooks for towels and clothes. Bedroom Two The second double bedroom overlooks the front garden and is furnished with a king-size bed with soft Egyptian cotton bed linen, a tall button-back headboard, a large ornate mirror and beautiful mirrored bedside tables and reading lamps. The room has a double, built-in wardrobe with plenty of hanging space and a single corner cupboard with shelving. (The travel cot and highchair are stored here.) Bedroom Three The third bedroom overlooks the front garden. Though the smallest bedroom, with one single bed, this is an inviting room for children and single guests. From the restful white, taupe and grey colour scheme to the deluxe Egyptian cotton bed linen, button-back headboard, large over-bed mirror, bedside table and lamp, built in wardrobe and storage cupboard, as the double bedrooms, nothing has been forgotten. Outside To the front of Appletree Cottage is a small, typically English cottage garden, with a lawn bordered by flowers and a gravel path leading from the garden gate to the front door with its porch and red letterbox. A rose and ivy climb the front of this 18th century property, making this a welcoming view of the front entrance. To the rear, accessed through the kitchen, is a large patio with a table and seating for 6. (A BBQ is not supplied but guests are free to use disposable BBQs which can be purchased at local supermarkets.) A large storage chest, on the patio, is available for guests to use to store walking boots. A garden tap may be used to wash off mud from boots. Welcome to Cotswold View, brought to you exclusively by Character Cottages, local specialists in stylish, Cotswold holiday rentals. Cotswold View is a stunning contemporary property, on the ground floor of a new eco-friendly Cotswold stone farmhouse, which sits on a small farm with spectacular south easterly views across the beautiful Windrush Valley. As well as the lovely countryside views, a wide variety of wildlife can often be seen from the property, and yet the farm is located only half a mile up a country lane from the famous Cotswolds village of Bourton-on-the-Water. Affectionately known as the "Venice of the Cotswolds", due to the lovely river that meanders through the centre of the village, Bourton is surrounded by stunning countryside, with numerous walks on the doorstep, and a central location that makes it ideal for exploring the entire Cotswolds region and beyond. Important Customer Notice: - Special Events: Christmas, New Year and the Cheltenham Horse Racing Festival are Special Events, with bookings typically limited to weeks only from a specific start day If your dates don’t appear to fit, then please click Contact Host below to find out what options may exist for you!
Cotswold View is accessed through the farmyard, and once you reach the front door, the only thing you look out over are miles of unbroken countryside. The front door opens into the main open-plan living space of the property, with all the rooms on the same ground floor level: •Living room/kitchen/dining area: This bright and spacious open plan space has floor to ceiling windows, which offer spectacular views across the Windrush Valley. The living room area contains plenty of seating with two comfy sofas and a side chair, a very realistic wood free electric log stove, and a flatscreen TV, with a Blu-ray player. One of the sofas opens up to form a single sofa bed for children under 10, if required. The large kitchen area is well equipped, with an electric oven, four ring induction hob, fridge freezer, dishwasher, microwave, kettle, toaster, washing machine and tumble dryer. The dining area contains a table, with seating for five; •Master bedroom: Further floor to ceiling windows provide lovely views across the Windrush Valley. The bedroom can be set up as either a super king size bed, or two single beds; •Bedroom 2: Located at the rear of the property, this room contains a double bed. There is no window in the bedroom, however the door and the wall separating the room from the main living area are glazed, to allow natural light in, with a curtain for privacy; •Family bathroom: The property layout means the bathroom can either be an ensuite or a family bathroom. It contains a bath, walk-in shower, toilet and wash basin. Immediately outside the front door is a patio area, with a table and four chairs, which is perfect for whiling away time and watching the wide array of wildlife that regularly visits the farm. The open grounds of the farm wrap around the house and extend down a grassy hill to the enclosed paddocks beyond. There is a charcoal barbecue at the property and ample off street parking is available next to the farmhouse.

This gorgeous new development, surrounded by open countryside, is built on the site of the old Westwoods Grammar School, with Rixon Road named after one of the old school houses, itself named after William Augustus Rixon (1858–1948) who was a renowned artist, landowner and Sheriff of Gloucestershire. The historic town of Northleach is just a few minutes’ walk from Hawthorn Cottage and is one of the best surviving examples of a medieval “New Town”. It was built in an area of almost entirely open sheep country by the church and local landowners who wanted to develop a network of markets where rents and levies could be collected! By 1227 the town was granted its market charter and really began to prosper (a market takes place to this day, every Wednesday). The town’s gentry prospered on wool from the famous Cotswold Lion breed, with the architecture of the town, and in particular the church of St Peter and St Paul, reflecting their wealth. With the decline of the wool industry, the town’s fortunes declined, but it picked up again with the development of a coaching route between Wales and London. The route that became the A40 was itself the reason for the second decline in the town’s fortunes with the rush of modern traffic through the town centre. In the 1980s a bypass was constructed, and the town returned to its peaceful market town roots, luckily with many of its historic 15th-, 16th- and 17th-century landmarks still intact for today’s travellers to explore. (See ‘Local Amenities’ below for more details of Northleach, including restaurant recommendations.) If you’d like to explore the well-known historic and natural sights of the Cotswolds –perhaps wander around Bourton-on-the-Water, Stow-on-the-Wold, Burford and the grounds of Sudeley Castle or visit Cheltenham Races - yet prefer modern, luxury living to beams and thatched roof tops, look no further than the sumptuously equipped Hawthorn Cottage in the ancient market town of Northleach!

  • Molto pulito, ben posizionato e conveniente.

Grazie

Charming cottage which is perfectly located for a relaxing break or holiday in the Cotswolds. Designed for comfort, the interior has been refurbished to a high standard. We are in a designated area of outstanding natural beauty and are a popular destination for walkers and cyclists who want to explore the many footpaths and bridleways. The cottage is a 2.5 mile drive from Bourton-on-the-Water and a short walk across the fields to the local pub in Cold Aston.
The Cottage adjoins our farmhouse; it is surrounded by wonderful Sycamore parkland. and is south facing. The cottaage has a tranquil, private garden with it's own access and parking. We are a small arable farm and also run a low key campsite in Spring and Summer. The cottage is a short walk (15 to 20 mins) across fields to our local pub which serves food most days. There are other pubs with restuarants that are a 45 minute/hour walk from us. A car is necessary for most supplies and for access from the train station. The nearest supermarket is in Bourton-on-the-Water. There are many wonderful villages with cafes, pubs and restaurants that are within a 5 mile radius and are perfect destinations for cyclists. Suggested destinations are Naunton, Guiting Power, Temple Guiting, Winchcombe, Sherborne, Stow, Northleach, The Slaughters and Chedworth.
The Cottage lies between 2 villages. Cold Aston is a great example of an unspoiled Cotswold village with a pub (The Plough), primary school and church. Notgrove remains mainly an estate owned village; it feels as if it has been untouched by time. The Parish church is St Bartholomew and is believed to be on the site of a Saxon cemetery. It houses effigies to the descendants of Richard Whittington (Dick Whittington). Both villages were mentioned in the Doomsday book with Cold Aston likely to have derived from a Roman settlement and Notgrove first mentioned in 716 AD. They are a short walk from the cottage. Visit local gems such as Adam Henson's Cotswold Farm Park, Sudeley Castle, the Slaughters, Bibury, Chedworth Roman Villa, Stow on the Wold, Cotswold Wildlife Park, Cirencester Corinium Museum. We are a 20-minute drive from Cheltenham which is famous for its many festivals from Racing to Literature to Jazz and Science. Consider a day trip exploring Gloucester, Bath, Stratford Upon Avon, Bicester Village and Oxford. Other suggestions include; Blenheim Palace and gardens, Sezincote House and gardens, Bourton House Garden, Chastleton House and gardens, Batsford Arboretum, Cotswold Falconry Centre (Batsford), Soho Farmhouse, Daylesford Organic Farm Shop.
  • Il cottage è in una posizione perfetta. Molto pulito e spazioso e ci tornerei sicuramente.

    Louis2019-05-14T00:00:00Z
La città nascosta, Bourton on the Water, era adorabile da attraversare.

Comunicazione eccellente in ogni momento.

Abbiamo adorato la posizione all'interno del bellissimo villaggio di Bourton on the Water.
