Welcome to the Big Guesthouse (managed by Borneo Orchard House); your rustic holiday home on the hills of Tamparuli, surrounded by secondary rainforest & durian orchard with scenic views overlooking the misty Kiulu valley.

Enjoy our land "Go-un" (means mist in Dusun language) Simple open design of the Big Guesthouse brings in the ambiance, sounds & coolness of the surrounding jungle. It could get chilly on rainy nights! Our place is half way between KK city & Kundasang.

Lo spazio
We have chosen to live and share our place as it is an authentic rural Sabah setting. It's very quiet at night here, no city lights and noisy distractions. Our rural setting helps you get close to nature, experience outdoor bathroom or take a dip in the spring water plunge pool.

Accesso per gli ospiti
From parking area, there are many steps down the path to the guesthouse, you may need to walk up and down many times, good exercise, but challenging if you have walking difficulties.

Guests are free to wander around our property except for our gated house area. There are paths around, and beautiful views down to Tamparuli and out to the South China Sea. Your downstairs sleeping area is your private space, but we do prefer to access upstairs when you stay with us to provide special dinner packages, cleaning etc. Upstairs of the Big Guesthouse remains unlocked when you are with us. We provide board games, books and different areas to relax in, but please tell us if you need anything specific prior to arrival and we will do our best to accommodate....perhaps you like a good game of mah jong ? we have a table and set for your use and are happy to setup.

Altre cose da tenere a mente
We live in secondary jungle, there are butterflies, Atlas moths, Rhinocerous beetles, bugs, mosquitoes and all kinds of fascinating crawlies. The Big Guesthouse sleeping area is netted, and mosquito proof (so long as you keep the doors closed).....we recommend guest to bring own mosquito repellent, which are usually only pesky around dawn and dusk, or periodic wet/dry/wet cycles when they breed up. If you are planning a walk, wear sturdy shoes, long light clothing and a hat.

In a rural environment, we also experience periodic random power outages. There is backup lighting available, and we hope to improve our solar system in the future.

In this area, it rains almost every day, usually in the evenings between 3-7pm.
Nights are cool and actually gets cold from around 10pm, the chilly wind follows the valley down from Mt Kinabalu, the fierce and majestic one that Sabah is best known for.

Please bring your own food supplies and make full use of our kitchen which has full kitchenware, kettle, pots and pans, coffee percolator, utensils and cutlery for all guests.

The 3 bedrooms downstairs of the Big Guesthouse accommodate up to 12 guests, each room sleeps 4 on bunk beds. Please let us know if your group size is larger than 12.

There is a semi open shower and an Asian toilet (squat) block attached to the downstairs area, the private cubicles gives you an open view of the hill above the house. The shower here is cold water collected from the rain water. Just 20meters away from the Big Guesthouse is another block with a Western toilet and a separate shower cubicle, this shower is fully enclosed and has a hot water pump system.

We provide a typical Sabahan style BBQ for your use, there is a small charge for charcoal but if you bring your own that's no problem. Wood is a nightmare to start, most big supermarkets stock BBQ charcoal, 3 bags is ideal.

Please inform us when you go on night walks around the area, there are animals around, such a barking deer, slow loris, civet cats and possibly tarsiers. We have seen all these creatures not far from our house, and the tarsier has been listed as its been seen from a very reliable source!

As we are an orchard you can expect fruit, normally fruiting season is around July/August so you can expect to enjoy durian, rambutan, tarap and cempadak, to name a few. There are pineapples on our land which fruit as they please, so if you can beat the squirrels to them they are juicy and ohh so sweet! we normally enjoy from the markets banana, watermelon, papaya, mango and other local fruits that are on our table year round. Our place is half way between UNESCO World Heritage Listed Kinabalu National Park and Kota Kinabalu city. In Kiulu valley there are tour operators that provide half day rafting packages in the river below us, which is about an hours hike straight down through a rough jungle track from our place. If you are interested in rafting we can help you arrange, the pickup point will be from Tamparuli town. There is also some great mountain bike options close by our place, the trails nearest to us are quite challenging due to the steep terrain, but well worth it for awesome views and pretty jungle sights. Alternatively there are less strenuous options around the flat lands of Tamparuli and Tuaran district. If you are interested in any activities, we can help you arrange with our preferred operators.

Our nearest neighbor is down the hill around 2km away and only see distant house lights in Kiulu valley across from us. Tamparuli is the nearest town, the Kiulu river winds through it with a pretty suspension bridge across it. Look closely and you can actually see our property in the hills above if you stand in the middle of the bridge. Wednesday is market day at Tamparuli, it is a colourful scene with locals selling everything and anything....well worth an early morning visit.

The closest village Kampung Kiwoi is a small hamlet spread down the side of the hills. Most villagers are rubber tappers, although the younger generation work in the city. Further up the road from us is Kampung Lingga, which has a beautiful primary school perched high on the hill with commanding views. The road then winds down another 5km or so to a dead end at the river, Kampung Bambangan is here which is smaller still, but very prettily wedged between the hills, streams and the river.
