Hi and thank you for visiting our listings! I, Susannah, am a writer for the Arts section of our local newspaper and am working on a novel about my family's history on Cape Cod. I am also a proud breast cancer survivor and advocate. My husband Russell is a carpenter, who has been building Cape Cod homes for over 30 years. We live in the family home my grandpa Steve built with our two daughters Aurelia Skye and Helena Rose (17 and 12 years old), our sweet, loving dog SerenStar, our friendly indoor/outdoor barn cats Fiddle and Felix (who love greeting our guests), our new kitten Fae (who only lives indoors for now), our three silly goats Lance Romance, Puck and Princess Buttercup and our 16 mademoiselles (= egg laying chickens).
Both our families have lived on the Outer Cape, this wild slice of land between ocean and bay, for many generations. Susannah's family has hosted visitors since the 1930s and we have welcomed AirBnB guests from around the world for over a decade. We feel incredibly lucky to live here in Wellfleet and feel privileged to share our little piece of heaven with our guests, who in turn by coming here help us keep our beloved home in our family.
Our families are both deeply rooted on the Outer Cape. Russell's ancestor, John Fulcher, survived one of Cape Cod's many historical shipwrecks off Nauset Beach in 1852. Desperate sailors had tied the Irish boy - age 14 - to the ship's mast during a terrible storm in the hopes he might be spared. Miraculously, young John was washed ashore alive the next morning, still tied to the sunken ship's mast with the ship's wet cat tucked under his shirt. Hard to know who was more frightened, the boy or the cat! One of only three survivors, young John Fulcher never set foot on a ship again. Instead he married a local Cape Cod girl and founded the Fulcher family, now one of the largest Cape Cod families. Russell has more cousins than he can count!
Susannah's great-grandfather Clarence Bell's ancestors settled in Wellfleet after arriving from England not long after the Mayflower landed. Clarence was the first doctor on the Outer Cape to own an automobile, which allowed him to serve many in need from Provincetown to Eastham. There is a plaque on Wellfleet's Main Street to commemorate Clarence Bell's commitment to families in our community. Clarence's daughter Clarece, Susannah's grandmother, married the young carpenter Stephen Daniels and together they built a home for their young family - this home is now our Sunshine House.
Susannah's mother Sharon grew up in this house until, as a college student, she meet and fell in love with Susannah's father, Siegfried, during a study-abroad summer in Austria. Sharon moved to Austria with Siegfried, where Susannah was born in a small town on the foot of the Alps. Her family spent every summer in Wellfleet with Grandpa Steve. Susannah learned to walk here in her grandpa's house, and for as long as she can remember longed to one day live in this house in Wellfleet.
Susannah and Russell were married in front of the fireplace in Grandpa's house and have since turned it into their small B&B named Sunshine House, in the spirit of Susannah's musician brother Chris Beer's song "Sunshine". These words from the song capture the feeling Susannah and Russell hope to give everyone who visits this magical place:
"I want some sunshine in my life ... open up my windows and let the sunshine in ... no matter what the future may bring, I'm going to build those windows right in, to let the sunshine in ...
I'm in the mood for sunshine, hit me with some sunshine, I want sunshine in my life ..."
It brings us such joy to bring sunshine into the life of our guests!
