Kampala, Regione centrale, Uganda

Makindye is one of the last 'wild places' left within sight of Kampala's skyscrapers. The tall trees teem with birdlife, and it's not unusual to occasionally spot other signs of wildlife - late at night you might see the bushy tail of a Jackson's Mongoose as it rushes into the bush either side of the road.

Our height on the hill delivers practical, as well as aesthetic benefits. The air is clean (some mornings you can look down on the smog line overhanging the city centre). The nights are cooler - I have lived here for two years and unlike many a sweltering night spent elsewhere in Kampala, I have never once needed to run a fan.

And with cooler nights comes a distinct lack of mosquitoes. We get the odd one, but we are not bothered by them in the same way as neighborhoods in the valleys below are. All our rooms come with mosquito nets supplied, but nonetheless, it is nice not to have to spray oneself with gallons of repellent of an evening!

Makindye centre still has the feel of a village, with a market (Friday's only) and local shops and cafes down the road - which sell all the basics - but we are lucky enough to have a well equipped Country Club down the road which has gym facilities, tennis courts, pool and squash courts as well as business centre facilities and a restaurant.

A short boda or car journey will bring you to a number of more well stocked supermarkets including nearby Quality Hill (about 3km) which boasts a Belgian owned Patisserie, cafe, restaurant, wine shop and delicatessen, well stocked green grocery and the best butcher in town and just a little further afield is the "Italian" supermarket (now owned by Chinese but the name has stuck and they still have the best range of pesto), Indian owned Embassy supermarket which is great for store cupboard staples and dairy, and a Brood outlet which offers a fantastic range of sourdough bread.

A range of restaurants this side of town offer good local options for dining - from a pizzeria, to a Mexican, a couple of great Indians, a Belgian owned bistro, to a Chinese and Korean - and if you're that way inclined, Kabalagala never really closes and offers late night clubbing options.

Durante il tuo soggiorno
I live on site, in a small apartment separate from the main house. I am normally around most days, but I will generally stay out of your way, unless you have any questions or problems.
