Lo spazio
Please read entire listing including House Rules.

If you are looking to relax and escape hectic life, you have found the perfect spot.

Calamity Cabins are situated in the rugged, remote, sparsely populated Medicine Bow Mountains near the Colorado/Wyoming border.

Situated on a forested mountainside and built in the 1800's, this one room, historical, authentic trapper's cabin still stands. Be prepared to rough it, although in rugged luxury.

It is approximately 200 square feet studio with a king-size bed, a small sitting area, and a primitive kitchen area. The cabin is constructed of hand chinked, log antique railroad ties, with a simple pine floor, and exposed beam vaulted ceilings. The rugged décor is locally collected or found, and authentically western. There are incredible views of mountain landscapes out every window.

It is a rustic cabin-which means there is no indoor plumbing. This requires making trips to the nearby new, hand-built, clean outhouse. The outhouse is located 60 feet from cabin, and shared with the other guests.

We provide you with potable, washing and drinking water. The kitchen area features an electric teapot for heating water, a microwave, a Kurig coffee pot with coffee, and a cuisine-art electric stove top burner.

There are also basic cooking items in the kitchen: plates, bowls, cups, silverware, pans, paper towels, wooden spoons, cutting board, sharp knife, and a washing station. Prepare for a visit as you would a camping trip, with these amenities provided. You are also welcome to use our grill or cook on the campfire.

The bed is a luxurious, clean king size pillow-top bed, topped with a down comforter with the best mountain view from the bed.

The Trapper Cabin has limited access to electricity. But there are outlets for phone charging and appliances.

The cabin is heated by a gas fireplace (looks like a wood burning stove but burns natural gas). There is also electric heat backup.

The front porch is where you spend most of your time taking in the wild surroundings, or at the nearby communal campfire ring, breathing the crisp mountain air.

We have a 20' communal teepee on the mountain top to relax in.

Hike, ski, snowshoe, snowmachine, or four wheel drive from your cabin door into the Medicine Bow/Routt National Forest finding endless, winding logging roads leading into Wyoming. Discover the untouched, rugged wilderness that surrounds our property that is full of remnants from pioneer logging and mining camps. The North Sand Dunes are 4 miles away...easily accessible by ATV or vehicle from the cabin, it is unique and beautiful.

The entire 80-acre property consists of three rental cabins and our home. The cabins, including ours, are located on approximately 10 acres and although private, they are in close proximity of each other. (see photo)

TEEPEE
Make sure to enjoy the secluded, 20' communal teepee. It has incredible views from the mountain side and a peaceful, relaxing interior. Bring your yoga mat! The trail to the teepee begins between our house and the garage. The walk to the teepee is 200 yards, and continues past the teepee making a circle around the 80 acres. This is a perfect trail for hiking, skiing, snowshoeing or snowmobiling. It has epic open views and also winds through the forest. When hiking past the teepee to explore the rest of our acreage, you might notice my parents house beyond ours. Their property adjoins ours and you are not trespassing. Please leave teepee as you found it, packing out trash.

BACK PORCH AT MAIN HOUSE
Our back porch is available for cooking on the grill. We have an outdoor seating area there that is also good for accessing the wifi.

CAMPFIRE
Cooking on the campfire is an option, weather permitting. There is a campfire grill for cooking on.

OUTHOUSE
The bathroom facility is a clean newly built outhouse that is located in the parking area. It is shared amongst all of the guests. There are steps to the outhouse. You can locate it by looking for the small building with a slanted roof, concrete porch and a moon on the door.

ROUTT / MEDICINE BOW NATIONAL FOREST and SAND DUNES
The county road (46) we are located on goes directly into the national forest. From the cabins, the national forest border is approximately 1/4 mile. It is within walking distance. In the summer, it is accessible by vehicle, hiking, or atv. In the winter, the road is plowed a short distance beyond the cabins, but once it reaches the National Forest, it is not plowed and is perfect for skiing, snowshoeing or snowmobiling. There are endless logging roads and remote forest access.

Altre cose da tenere a mente
I like to know your approximate arrival time. Not only that I have everything ready for you, but so I can also confirm you arrive, as cell service can make it hard to communicate if you have travel issues.

We mostly operate with self check in. We may or may not be here when you arrive. There are no keys involved and your name will be on a welcome sign on the outside of the cabin. There is a folder inside the cabin with all of the details for your stay. After your reservation is booked, we will send you our contact information which you can reach us at any time with questions.

We welcome dogs. Please let us know if you're bringing any. We may have other guests with pets and we ask that everyone is responsible, ensuring comfort for all. If you are bringing more than one dog, we ask you use the extra person fee to accommodate the pet fee. We ask that you do not leave pets unattended in the cabins.

We have snowshoes available to rent.

We have lots of space and are open to renting tent space or RV space with electricity available.

We offer a menu of ATV trips starting at $30 for a (hour) trip for two up to an old copper mine on the mountain. The ATV fits our driver and two guests. Signing the waiver is required. We do not have ATV rentals for guests to rent and head out on their own.

Cell and wifi service is very spotty. Over by the outhouse is the best spot.
We can provide emergency phone and internet from our home connections. We hope our guests find this a romantic opportunity to be still, unplugged, and connect with themselves and each other through nature.

Elk, fox, coyote, moose, bear, birds, rabbits, and many more creatures often wander the area. Keep this in mind for hiking and skiing. Bringing bear spray is a great idea. We have had bears on the property who have opened car doors. We have had foxes also raid cars. Keep your cars locked for this reason. You are responsible for animal protection. We advise taking your car keys to the outhouse at night in case there was an unlikely run in with a bear, you could hit your alarm and we could respond.

Bring a coat. Even in the summer.

Showers are available at the pool in Walden Colorado, which is the nearest town with restaurants, gas and services. It is 17 miles from the cabins.

Our favorite hangout is Mansker Station in Walden. It is 18 miles from the cabin and has wood fired pizza and whiskey...and beer etc. They feature live music in the summer on an outside stage with an amazing view of the Never Summer Mountains. It’s a “bikers welcome family bar” sort of place located in a beautiful hand built log cabin.

Walden, Colorado, Stati Uniti

We are located in a very isolated part of Colorado. Jackson County is about 1500 square miles and the population is 1500 people. That is one person per square mile.

"North Park" is what the locals generally refer to this large, undiscovered area. If you are an outdoors person, or want to reconnect to the outdoors, we are in a perfect spot, as not only our immediate surroundings, but the entire park is full of mountain hiking trails, lost alpine lakes, and undiscovered fishing streams.

The National Forest and the North Sand Dunes are absolute heaven for skiing, hiking, snowshoeing, motocross or ATV activities.

We are located close to a few Natural Hot Springs. The Hobo Pool (FREE with showers!) in Saratoga, Wyoming which is 60 miles. We love eating and drinking at The Wolf Hotel when we visit Saratoga. Strawberry Park Hot Springs is a must see in Steamboat Springs, Colorado which is 80 miles from us. These would both be a fun day's adventure.

Restaurants in Walden are open. Wycolo Restaurant and Bar is 8 miles from us into Wyoming and is open limited hours on the weekends.

Durante il tuo soggiorno
We are usually around to answer questions or help with anything you might need. We also realize what a perfect spot you will be in to decompress and un-stress from a busy life and respect your privacy during your stay.

It is important to us that you have a great time staying here. Please ask questions, approach us if you need something, and give us feedback. We love to help with information so you can plan the best trip possible!

We appreciate communicating updated arrival times.

We have a 12 year old black border collie (Apache), a 10 month old Australian Shepard (Puukko) and a cat. They roam freely on our property. They are all friendly. Puukko is overly friendly and curious and might invade your space. She is young and learning how to stay in our space. She loves kids and other dogs, but let us know if she is too much so we can reign her in. Apache is old and might bark, but doesn't bite. He is normally a home body. Give me a heads up if your dogs are cat aggressive so I can keep the kitty safe. We are very used to "Dog Fest" as most folks bring dogs and it seems to work just fine.
