Water Forest Retreat Hiker's Haven is a very private semi off grid electrified and heated tiny house just steps away from a brook nestled on 100 acres of lush forest. Enjoy the water views inside from the many windows or out on the deck or firepit area. There are 2 1/2 miles of hiking trails with a pond, marsh and small waterfall. Come here to hike, fish, decompress and rejuvenate in this magical woodland! We also have an Octagon and Treehouse. Please click on our profile picture to read more.

Lo spazio
Regarding the coronavirus, we follow all CDC cleaning protocols. We also supply hand sanitizer wipes, Lysol and hand sanitizer.

Hiker’s Haven is a great place to relax and take in nature. It is a good place to hike, write, fish, create art and music, bird and animal watch, snow shoe, and star gaze as there is little light pollution, along with many other activities in a private woodland setting.

Hiker’s Haven is 2/10ths of a mile or a three minute downhill walk through a forest that comes to Goldmine brook. The walk can be steep in places and has 57 steps. People in average shape should not have a problem. Remember, you must go up hill to return to the parking area. Please pack light to minimize your walking distance.

The space is 198 sq ft and has electricity and heat but not running water. Bottled water is provided along with hand sanitizer. There is a locking door. The key is located on top of the cabinet. Inside you will have wonderful water views through most of the eight screened windows. The view from the deck is great too. There is a ceiling fan and an electric fireplace for your comfort. A queen size bed with soft sheets, end tables, dining table and chairs, coat rack topped with wine glasses and a mirror, USB ports with cables, cabinet and bench round out the furnishings. Three stained glass transoms look out over the water. Above hangs a birch log decked out with fairy lights, corkscrew wood, silver coated maple leaves and a hornets nest!

The bathroom is conveniently located in the house and has a vented composting toilet so there is no odor. Toilet paper is provided. There are directions on the wall on how to use it. PLEASE READ CAREFULLY so that it will function properly.

Although there is no traditional kitchen, inside there is space on the cabinet, table and outdoor tables where you can prepare your meals.

In the cabinet you will find camping supplies such a dinnerware set, cutlery, cutting board, sugar and sugar substitutes, spices, oil, pots, pans, lighters, scissors, wine and bottle and can openers, dish cloth, tin foil, insect repellent, umbrellas, flashlights, battery powered lantern and a first aid kit. Underneath the cabinet you’ll see a propane cooking stove. On top of the cabinet is a Kuerig coffee maker with assorted coffee, hot chocolate, hot cider, tea and chai latte. Two pottery mugs are provided which Nancy made and are for sale upon request. We provide a handmade complimentary glycerin soap. There is also a book binder with trail maps, directions on how to use the equipment, general information and restaurant menus. There is a basket underneath the bench which has extra propane canisters, Lysol, paper towels, hand sanitizer, batteries and extra lightbulbs.

Under the bed you will find a container with an assortment of games. Another one with soap, towels and wash cloths. A black plastic container to use for dirty dishes and a box of spare towels.

There are 2 1/2 mile of wood lined hiking trails with some that follow Goldmine brook to a small waterfall that once hosted a grist mill back in the 1700's.You can still see many of the large stone foundations. Along the trail you will see many of the iconic stone walls that are unique to New England. Maps are provided and trail markers are posted along the way. There are many benches and chairs along the trail where you can sit, relax and enjoy the scenery. While hiking walking poles or sticks are recommended as the terrain can be rocky with steep areas and stone steps. Two walking sticks hang on the wall in the tiny house for you to use. Because of the terrain hiking boots are strongly recommended. These are hiking trails only. No ATV, dirt or mountain bikes please. While hiking we ask that you please respect the private signs as these trails lead to the Octagon and Treehouse where guests may be staying. Also, please stay on our side of the brook as the opposite side is owned by our neighbor. Thanks!

It is about a 8 minute walk to the spring fed pond that is part of Goldmine brook. The brook is rated class A and supports a myriad of wild life such as river otters, mink, muskrat and great blue herons. If you like to fish bring your gear to try for native trout, big and small mouth bass, white and yellow perch, pickerel and shiners. Previous guests have had good luck fly fishing here. Since the pond is small we please ask that you catch and release. Looking for a place to swim, canoe or kayak? Visit Gardner Lake state park in Salem which is only 15 minutes away. (you will need to supply your own canoe and kayaks) Depending on water flow, you can go for a dip in the brook right outside your door or swim in the spring fed pond which is a 6 minute hike away. We supply water floats. Please wear water shoes as the rocks can be slippery. You can also take a dip in the pool under the waterfall which is about a 25-30 hike away. Looking for some ocean fun? Bluff Point state park in Groton is another good choice. Here they have a beach with biking and hiking trails. Bluff Point is about 24 minutes away. Both state parks are free of charge. If you are looking for more things to do check out our guide book on Airbnb by clicking our profile picture.

The outdoor living area is conveniently layered with crushed stone. Enjoy a fire in the fire pit while eating meals out on the deck, by the fire or inside. We have a propane grill and a grill you can put over the fire pit. There are tiki torches for extra light and ambiance along with two tables, chairs and zero gravity lounge chairs. Seasoned wood is avaiable for 8.00 a box and contains kindling and a pine fire starter. Please, no wood deliveries after dusk. You can also bring your own wood or use any wood on the forest floor as long as it isn't being use to line the trails.

Enjoy a hot private outdoor shower up at the main house. It is about a 3-4 minute walk from Hiker's Haven. The shower is private while you are using it, but is shared with other guests. Shampoo and conditioner are provided. There is also a sink here where you can wash your dishes. Dish soap and scrubbers provided. There is a dish drying cloth in the cabinet back at Hiker's Haven. Due to freezing temperatures, the shower and sink will not be available in winter. A wash basin is supplied for sponge bathing. You can heat up water on the propane stove or use the coffee machine. Guests staying two nights or more during this season are welcome to use the indoor shower up at the main house. In winter we will take care of washing the dishes.

Because of the distance, WiFi is not available at Hiker's Haven, but is available in the parking area and pottery studio. If your phone has an Internet carrier, you should be able to access the Internet from hikers haven. AT&T and Verizon phone services work well in the tiny house.

There is a Walmart and Big Y grocery store one mile away where you can buy food and other essentials. Since there is no refridgerator you will need to bring a cooler or you can borrow ours. There are also many good restaurants close by. We provide some menus in the bookbinder or you can go to our guidebook on Airbnb by clicking on our profile picture. Some places even make deliveries or you can use a delivery app. Looking for a liquor store? Bozrah Wine and Spirits is one mile away on the right heading west on route 82.

For the nature enthusiast, take part in a guided walk where Nancy will discuss the history, plants, animals, mushrooms and geology of the area. The walk costs 15 per person and lasts about an hour and a half. We usually cover two miles and may go off trail. After the hike we will go into the house and sample some autumn berry syrup, shagbark bark hickory syrup, sassafras syrup, spicebush pepper and acorn cookies when available. We also have shagbark hickory syrup for sale. You might want to bring a drink, snack and your camera.

BEFORE YOU BOOK, please keep in mind that this is a fancy form of camping (glamping!) that does not have running water in the tiny house. There will or could be insects, animals, sudden weather changes , rocky paths and hilly terrain. (Welcome to New England!) It is 2/10ths of a mile or 3 minute hike to get to Hiker's Haven. The hike is all down hill which means the return trip is all up hill! Please pack light as you will have less to carry. Bert and I can help you carry your gear.

Smoking is not allowed inside the tiny house, but is allowed outside.

For people staying two nights or more I will leave you a check in text to see if you need anything.

We also have a pottery shop-studio that you are more than welcome to visit. There are many items for sale including hand woven scarves and Shagbark Hickory syrup that I make.

Check out is easy! Please leave the key on top of the cabinet and you are all set to go! If you would like to stay longer and hike the trails after check out you are more than welcome!

Bert and I will do everything we can to make your stay relaxing and enjoyable. Please feel free to contact us at anytime during your stay if you need anything. We look forward to hosting you!

Altre cose da tenere a mente
Please bring your own personal toiletries, food, drinks and ice for your cooler. If you do not have a cooler you can borrow ours. You may also want to bring footwear for the outdoor shower or if you plan to go into the brook as it is rocky. Please stay on our side of the brook while hiking as the opposite side is owned by our neighbor. No wood deliveries after dusk. Thanks for your cooperation!

We live at the end of a cul de sac in a quiet residential neighborhood that Nancy’s father and grandfather built in the late 1950's. The tiny house is nestled on 100 acres of forest with a brook running along one side of the property.

Bert and I love hiking and being out in nature. We love meeting new people, making them comfortable, and want them to experience what we get to enjoy here everyday. We hope you will fall in love with our quiet corner of Connecticut with it’s rolling forested hills, beautiful ocean and lakes, iconic stone walls and rich colonial history. Bert has worked as a CFO and is currently a financial counselor. I am a professional harpist, potter, weaver and forager. We have a small pottery shop where you can check out items for sale. I also make shagbark hickory syrup which has a flavor all it’s own. It is great on pancakes, Ice cream or in cocktails. If you would like to taste it just let me know! We have some syrup for sale. There are 2 1/2 miles of trails on this hundred acre property that has been in my family for three generations. I have put up many trail cameras to document the wildlife which is quite abundant and have learned so much about the local flora and fauna. I continue to learn everyday! We hope you will enjoy your stay at any of our homes and find the forest, brook and wildlife as magical and beautiful as we do! All the best, Nancy and Bert.
