Dove ti troverai

Holbox, Quintana Roo, Messico

Closeby there are little homes of locals, a templo, 2 little stores (tienda) with all the basics, several small hotels, and local Pizza Alex on Avenida Kuka.

The beach (playa) is left outside our gate, just a 2 minute walk on sandy street shaded by palm trees.

The village (centro) is a 5 minute walk either from Av Kuka or the beach, west. There is a tiny mercado by the airport for fruit & veggies, they also sell fresh tacos & tortas in the morning. Fresh juice (jugo) made on the spot- orange, other fruit, or wonderful green drink (jugo verde) with the local chaya plant, ginger (ginjebre), celery (apio), orange, etc. Just up the street from the park there is another juice bar (jugeria) with ginger, accross from the roasted chicken spot (pollo rostizado).

In the afternoon we recommend Villa Mar on the beach for fresh fish & ceviche & beer! Norma has owned this restaurant for 30 years, and her daughter Fatima cooks now. They get the freshest fish, as Norma’s husband Nati was one of the original fishermen on the island.

A very quiet romantic dinner away from town is at Cielito Lindo, just a few minutes walk east on Avenida Kuka, past Ida y Vuelta camping. An open palapa restaurant with full menu & wines. They have fresh salads, fish filet, and good steak (cortes de bistec). Owners are Pepe & son Jose, from Mallorca.

For a special treat, try the sushi bar on top of Villas Paraiso del Mar at sunset. Incredible view, pool, drinks & rolls.

For the beach we recommend “Bananas” , Albertos palapas- simple palm palapas with many hammocks allow you to relax, swim, and enjoy fresh coconut prepared for you on the spot with machete. He rents bikes, stand up paddle boards, kayaks. Prices can be negotiated, don’t be shy! On beach just before sushi sign.

Holbox was a fishing island, inhabited by descendants of European mariners in search of “palo tinto” hardwood, and other goods taken from the Yucatan. When they first found the island it had just one palapa on Punta Mosquito beach, with a man harvesting & selling turtle oil.
The island has a gripping charm, an explorers haven, where every tourist thinks they’re discovering something new. The village is only 2 km square, from arriving on the ferry on the south lagoon caleta, to the main beach facing northwest, then west to Punta Coco and east to the river that cuts through to the back bay, and past to Punta Mosquito. The rest of the island, 40 km, is uninhabited, declared the Yum Balam Reserve.
Holbox has sandy streets, a pedestrian lifestyle, & boho sunset celebrations.
Our neighborhood is mixed between locals, a templo, boutique hotels, and some jungle lots.
