Heart-breaking view on the gulf, 60 m2 and 30 of terrace in front of the sea, North-east oriented, 500 from the tourist harbor. Ideally for four people, quiet and surrounded by nature. Enjoy cooking or recounting your feelings when the fishing vessels.
To reach the Terrazza: 70 steps down, from the main road, the same n.of steps of a 3 - floor building. My 80 years neighbour, is still doing on a daily basis.

Lo spazio
Imagine you were in a boat: from the rooms or the terrace, in the morning you can see the sunrise in front of you, at sunset, after a day of sun and swimming, you admire the fishing boats entering in the harbour followed by hundreds of seagulls: a real dream. Nicely furnished with Italian taste, blue and white colours. However, you are at the Terrazza.
You can reach the “Terrazza only with the stairs” Ninety steps from the road and eighty to reach the sea. I do consider this an advantage since you gain and benefit from silence and calm. Is this what you are looking for when you are in holiday? Isn’t it? So, walk the steps without hesitations;

The features of the Terrazza are: you are in Tuscany nearby the most famous citta d’arte: Siena (130 Km), Florence (200 Km ), Roma (130 Km) and the Tuscany Island of Giglio (1 hour by ferry) but at the same time in an exclusive and environment-conscious sea-side of Italy.

Parking space: I always park my car in Via Panoramica. This is a free space w/o fees. In August parking could be demanding since it is full peak season. My suggestion is to follow the Panoramica with the sea at your right side, not the other way. If it is very crowded, carry on until you reach a "Madonnina" on your right side. On the other side there is a small road: park there

I am committed to a clean environment. In the village there is a selective garbage with bins. You find instructions in the house for the collecting days. Bins have to be brought to the start of the stairs: a small individual effort, for a great collective results. :))

Accesso per gli ospiti
The guests will enjoy: two bedrooms, one dining room w/kitchen, bathroom (completely renovated in march 2014), external shower and 30 m2 of Terrace where to eat. In 2014 I bought a pellets stove to enjoy the cold months and to offer more opportunities to my clients. With the stove, the Terrazza is now perfect.

Altre cose da tenere a mente
Beaches by foot:
•Walk down the 80 steps at your left hand you find the Hotel La Caletta with a small private beach with umbrellas, paying suns-beds and sand for kids. Water is calm and ideal for kids;
•After la Caletta, always at your left side you will find after 50m a small free public beach: pleasant not very known and attended by local people;

Beaches by cars:
•La Giannella: 15’ towards Orbetello, the first road on the left after having left Porto Santo Stefano and before Orbetello will drive to the Giannella: 6 Km of public and private beach with parking areas. Nice view on the Village of Talamone;
•La Feniglia: 20’. After Orbetello crossroads, the first turn on the left will lead you the Feniglia. Turn left and then left again you will find a shadowed parking. Walk for 15’ under the pine forest and will have 6km of nice sandy beach overlooking south. Organised areas are followed by free beach. You may also rent bikes to reach the beach: very nice.

Local markets. Each Tuesday there is a local market in Porto Santo Stefano with vendors coming from the region. Saturday the market is in Orbetello. Go early in the morning it is nice and colourful;

Go to the Island of Giglio: 1 hr ferryboat if you are fascinating by wrecks…. See the web site for info and timetable http://www.giglioinfo.it/index.html;

Local Holiday. Each 15th of August at the sunrise there is THE Palio in Porto Santo Stefano small harbour. Palio is a competition of 4 rowing boats. Very colourful. All the village is stuck. If you are there, do not miss it;

Walk to the old lighthouse. This is an easy walk in the shadow good also for children (45’ minutes back and for). Get off the steps down to the road close to the see and when you have reached it turn left and carry on until the road ends. Then the road becomes a small track and goes up following the cost. Follow the track. On your right side you have Talamone and the Tuscany cost far. The track is small and pleasant and almost desert. At the end of the track you will find a small-cemented road going down. Follow it and will reach the old lighthouse. The view is great with l’isola del Giglio in front of you and in windy days you may see up to Isola di Montecristo. During my walk I usually met Pippo, an old fisherman sleeping on the track under the shadow. A nice old time memory of the past;

The wine of Calagrande. Calagrande is THE bay after Santo Stefano. Take the Panoramica road towards the right side in direction Cala piccola. After 3 kms you will find at your right side Calagrande: the sightseeing is striking. As soon as you see the Cala, the road step-up and after 500 mt on your right side, there is a big iron gate of a nice-private-looking villa with signs: Wine and lemon. Enter in side – even if you think to enter in a private place – and ask for the buy the wine. They have white and red whine made with a local grape variety, Ansonica. I prefer the white even if it reaches 13°. The view from the cantina is fascinating. Drink it cold and your swordfish will be perfect;

Bike cycling in Feniglia http://www.chicercatrova.biz/feniglia.htm. Feniglia is the name of a beach linking the village of Porto Ercole with Ansedonia. The beach and the forest behind is a regional park. Between the two villages you have 8 km of promenade under the shadow. You may rent bicycles at the entrance of the park before reaching Porto Ercole. Great for Children and adults.

Porto Santo Stefano (Grosseto), Toscana, Italia

Porto Santo Stefano is not indicated in any Lonely Planet guide and to a limited extent, in other guides. In my opinion, this is a positive step forward. This is the reason why I have written few lines for the guests of the Terrazza. I will be happy if you will enjoy things I like, I generally used to do when I am there.

Eat pizza con le acciughe e cipolle (pizza with anchovy and onion). Reach the old Church. With the Church in front of you on your right side, you will find a road, follow it and it will lead to the Forno (village bakery). Go early morning. You may buy not only bread but also the typical pizza with anchovy and onion. I like it early morning, provided that you did good exercise before... It is recommended to eat it in two people….

Buy and cook pesce spada (sword-fish). Follow the promenade along the arbour and you will reach the fish-shops (Pescherie). They are all the same, but I prefer the one manage by the single-hand Roberto. Gossips say that he was used to practice bombs-fishing. Buy the fresh slices you need of pesce spada. Cook it in a pan with onion, white whine and rosemary (you may find it in the garden of the Terrazza). Boiled or pan potato are perfect with it. The whine of Cala Grande suits great with it (see after);

Eat at the Moletto. The day you are tired to cook, go to the Moletto restaurant along to the harbour. They have outside table near to the water and the fisherman boats. The view is great and the price is reasonable (20-30 €). The mushroom – squid soap is unique; (Tel. 0564.813636);

Discover “Trattoria da Maria” in Pereta. 30 Km from Santo Stefano towards Scansano, there is small village named Pereta. If you are dreaming the Val d’orcia landscape, you got it! Pereta was the last hamlet of the Siena Republic towards East as the lonely war tower witnesses. The Trattoria da Maria is a superb heritage of Tuscany high quality kitchen and wine (Brunello di Montalcino). Without hesitation one of the best Trattorie I have never been before. Booking is a must and price are reasonable (Tel 0564.505051).

I started designing and guiding adventures travels in Italy in April 2008, the day after a friend of mine asked me to discover central Italy off the beaten track. Since then, I have led more than 11 tours with more than 100 guests. I’m a rural development professional by profession, travel designer and walker by passion. After an international career in cultural and local development that took me around the world, I turned my skills to share a lifelong passion for the culture of my country. Ten years on, it became clear that managing tour groups in ever-changing scenarios is no simple matter! Bringing together direct experience, ingenuity and local knowledge, I created WalkItalyTours. Our walking tours also have a ‘local development’ impact: much of the income generated goes to support the communities we visit.
