Lo spazio
**** UPDATES**** The driveway was fixed in August 2019! AND there is a new Fisher Baby Bear woodstove in January 2020!

The Top of the Buffalo Cabin was built with a very low carbon footprint. 95% of the wood used in construction was salvaged from local down trees after a devastating ice storm in 2009. Logs were gathered onsite and milled onsite for the building lumber. Stones for the foundation pillars were gathered from a local creek. The metal for the roof and siding along with the insulation material were reused from old chicken houses. And the windows and doors are all re-used from other buildings. Building design and construction techniques were based upon traditional Ozark practices, and minimal external energy was employed throughout the entire building process.

There is a potable water tank in the loft of the cabin. The water tank is filled periodically from an excellent spring on the property, which is also used for our residence. The water flows from a spring by the creek into stainless steel tanks from which the water is pumped 300 vertical feet (via solar power) to the tank in the cabin loft from which it flows by gravity 6 feet to the sink below. So very low pressure. There is a solar shower bag which some guests use to shower, either by leaving it in the sun to heat or pouring in warm water. Please note that in the winter the water system may be completely frozen as the cabin is only heated by guests.

Accesso per gli ospiti
The cabin is for your own use only. Very secluded and very private. But if you have a large group you can have access to a six site campground that can be used for additional guests. If you are interested ask about pricing.

Altre cose da tenere a mente
Cabin is on a private organic farm surrounded by the Ozark National Forest. Respect quiet rules and neighbors privacy. There is no soft fabric in the cabin so bring bedding, blankets and towels. Spring water available except when systems are occasionally frozen in the winter (The cabin is not heated in the winter when there are no guests). Bring your own cooking stove, pots, plates and utensils. There are NO furnishings with the cabin. One room open downstairs with an open sleeping loft above.

There is no garbage disposal or recycling facilities at the cabin. Please come prepared to follow the backpacker's motto: 'If you pack it in, then pack it out'.

If you are looking for outdoor recreation, this area is perfect. World class hiking, mountain biking (right from the cabin door), rock climbing, and canoeing (in season), are all available.

There are really good hikes on the Upper Buffalo Trails immediately accessible from the cabin. Then there is the very popular Whitaker Point/Hawksbill Crag hike--- beautiful but generally busy--- about 5 miles down the road. The Lost Valley hike in Boxley Valley is great. I really like the Buffalo River trail from the Ponca low water bridge to Steel Creek. It mostly meanders on the bluffs above the Buffalo River... out and back hike. One of the best which is adventurous, beautiful and challenging is Indian Creek/Eye of the Needle hike accessible from the Kyles Landing campground on the Buffalo. I have some favorite off the beaten path hikes in the Upper Buffalo Wilderness (just down the road) with exceptional visits to Native sites, waterfalls and remote forest requiring some orienteering as there are no complete direct trails to the adventure sites. If you are staying at the cabin, I will be glad to help with logistics and details. Oh, also Kings River Falls is a beautiful short hike (about 2 miles round trip) to a great waterfall swimming hole. It is a short drive from the cabin.... and many, many more. Just ask. ;)

I love the outdoors and was raised and homeschooled on this farm. My dad, How, helps me with the cabin and guests and he is an expert mountain biker and recreational enthusiast. We have been organic gardening and raising animals on this farm since I was born. We have worked for decades for environmental quality and water protection, promoting outdoor recreation including building and creating the Upper Buffalo Trails--- a 38 mile trail system for mountain biking and hiking. I was primarily homeschooled along with my brother on this farm. My dad, to support us on the farm, worked teaching College mathematics and statistics, running a successful high tech business in the parking management industry, grant writing, fundraising and community organizing. He is the author of philosophical novel about the state of humanity through the ages and into the 21st century... inspired by and written right here.
