For work or holiday, when you stay in my lovely city apartment in iconic Nishi New Acton you'll be so welcome. Free wifi and secure u'cover dedicated parking. Breakfast. Close to Parliament, ANG, Convention Centre and most main tourist places.

Generous balcony, open or enclosed. Magnificent lake and mountains views. Stunning sunsets!

In vibrant city precinct with top restaurants, great cafes, licensed cinema, bars, hairsalon, convenience store, gym, ECS, unique artworks and peaceful gardens.

Lo spazio

This apartment is a beautiful light-filled quiet place, near to the heart of Canberra. Stylish yet homely. Away from it all ... yet close to everything. Many guests mention how much they like the ambience. Their own enjoyment then adds to the build-up of good vibes.

Parking is totally free all the time you're staying at 'High in the Sky'. You drive down to the dedicated parking spot in the basement when you arrive, and then you come and go as often as you wish. No boomgates, no tickets - just drive in and out. Free parking in a busy city parking station! How good is that?!

Breakfast options: Free supplies in the apartment of meusli, cereal, long-life milk, spreads, coffees and teas. Or two great cafes for breakfast downstairs in Nishi, or one fabulous cafe next door, Morning Glory, open at 7 specialising in gourmet breakfast and brunch. Good provisions available from 7am (7 days) at the precinct's convenience store, just a few minutes' walk away, like bread, fruit, eggs and fresh milk. And next to the convenience store, there's a new eatery Rebel Rebel which opens at 7am for breakfast and doesn't close until midnight.

New Acton is a small city precinct, on the southern edge of the Canberra CBD, beside Lake Burley Griffin. Across the street from ANU and within easy walking distance from the city centre (we call 'Civic') and the National Convention Centre. 21 Capital Mart is a licensed convenience store open 7 days, selling bread, fruit and vegetables, a variety of other foods, daily necessities and lots of good chocolate. And good wine, and lots of different drinks. Open from 7am until midnight, every day.

The energy-efficient Nishi building has Energy Rating 8.5 stars and Green Energy Rating 6 stars. These impressive ratings, along with its striking architecture and unique artworks, make Nishi a Canberra icon that's in high demand with visitors to the national capital, at all times of year.

The apartment is high above Ovolo Nishi Hotel and just below the penthouses. The decor is stylish, with quiet relaxing colours. Even though Nishi's on a city street, when the outer sliding doors on the balcony are closed, all traffic noise is completely excluded.

You can sit on the balcony in the lounge area to read or listen to audio, or to or have a quiet drink, overlooking the bushland within the huge multi-treed campus of the Australian National University. Or dine on the balcony, enjoying a brilliant sunset or watching the changing of the coloured lights on Telstra tower and the Australian Film and Sound Archives building. It's totally private and serene.

But take the lift down to Ovolo Nishi and the place is buzzing. There's Monster restaurant, the retro chic lounges, the two elegant fireplaces and library. The bar’s open every night until late. And down the grand staircase, there's Palace Electric Cinema, with eight theatres and its own fabulous bar and food. (Take your drinks in to the movie with you!)

When you open the front door of this unique apartment, you'll look right along the hallway to a vista of undisturbed Australian bushland – ‘the bush’– on Black Mountain. If it's a sunny autumn, winter or spring afternoon, the sunlight will be streaming in from the west. The balcony juts out from the building. This enhances the sensation that you’re living in the sky.

Skillful design meant that electric air-conditioning was not required in Nishi apartments but summer's are hotter now and two large quiet ceiling fans have been installed. Natural cross ventilation has an air-conditioning effect for much of the year. Heating from autumn through to spring comes from the entire roof of solar cells which heat a thermal hot water system, boosted when needed.

The bathroom has heated towel rails for an added touch of cosiness from autumn through to spring (March to October). The two ceiling fans – one in the lounge and one in the bedroom - are very effective at cooling the space when needed.

The style of the apartment is simple and welcoming, with high quality furnishings and appliances.

If you'd like to stay in for the evening and cook, the well-equipped kitchen area has everything you'll need for preparing breakfast, lunch or dinner. The pantry is stocked with basics like pastas, rice, sauces, snacks and soup, cereal, muesli and long-life milk. If you'd like to BYO bread or croissants for breakfast, there's butter, honey, peanut butter and yes, there's vegemite of course.

There's a microwave oven, electric kettle and a pod coffeemaker, plus tea of several types, ground coffee (regular and decaf) instant coffee (regular and decaf) and long life milk. There's a teapot and coffee plunger. And a toaster. And a stick blender for making morning smoothies.

There are several restaurants and bars in the New Acton precinct, from family to high-end. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served in several places. Monster is a highly-rated restaurant in Ovolo Nishi, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. The bar is open until late and the coffee machine is closed down at about 9/9.30. (Take a mug down from the apartment to get barista coffee.)

Makeshift at the bottom of the grand Nishi staircase is a great place for breakfast, brunch or lunch. Parlour is wonderful for drinks, tapas and intimate dinners. (Or you can buy meals and wine by the bottle from Parlour to take to the apartment.) Morning Glory aims to make going out for breakfast as special as going out for dinner. Now they serve lunch and dinner as well.

Under Morning Glory is a very classy bar/nightclub called High Jinks, open on Friday and Saturday nights until 2am. And Ferke's little cafe serves Ethiopian food at lunchtime.

Over sixty restaurants with a large variety of food styles will home deliver to Nishi apartments, via local services: Menulog, Uber Eats, Deliveroo.

There's a local fresh organic veggie and fruit market in Nishi every Saturday. 3pm-6pm near the grand staircase. Free wine tasting (Take the two tasting glasses with you from the apartment.)

Bottled wine can be bought from Parlour (next door to Nishi) at two-thirds the restaurant price. At Rebel Rebel, next to the convenience store, you can choose a bottle of wine to buy from a curated collection. The convenience store sells some good quality frozen meals. Fully-licensed Palace Cinema serves bistro meals and snacks, day and night.

The apartment has a front loader washing machine and Bosch condenser dryer. This means that no humidity builds up in the apartment when the dryer's in use. As well, there's a foldable drying rack for natural drying on the balcony. Ironing board and very good iron are provided.

A generous area of hidden cupboard space has hanging area, shelves and drawers. Two umbrellas are available. (One is extraordinary). There's a full range of cleaning equipment and supplies for long-stay guests.

The lounge area has HDTV and blu-ray player for free-to-air local TV, as well as internet streaming of Netflix, Spotify, YouTube, FoxPlay, iView etc. (Remember to bring your own passwords.) If you like to travel with your own favourite movies and music on a flashdrive, the player has a front USB port. Check out SBS on Demand for hundreds of free movies, including several Australian classics. There's also another movie channel.

There's a small portable bluetooth speaker, studded with Swarovski crystals! It syncs by Bluetooth with your phone or iPad. (You’ll need to charge the speaker first). There's a variety of chargers to use if you've left yours at home. Listen to your own music or audio collection, as you sit on the balcony in the afternoon sunshine, or in the evening with the soft glow of flameless candles, or by the light of the touchlamp.

A large dining table with four chairs doubles as a generous work-desk but there's also a designated work-station. It has computer, keyboard and mouse, and workspace for your use. (Password provided.) There's an NBN connection, both ethernet and wifi, with free unlimited data and good speed.

The floor lamp in the lounge area is 'mother and child', providing a mood light and a reading light. (Whenever I stay at Nishi, I like to leave the mother light on when I go out to give a welcome for my return.)

In the lounge/dining area, you'll find an up-to-date collection of brochures about local activities like festivals and current cultural events, as well as a couple of books about Canberra and a few other books you may enjoy. The latest edition of 'Canberra's Secrets' was added as soon as it was published in 2019.

The Guest Guide is detailed and comprehensive. Please look through it when you arrive. You're invited to leave a note in the Guestbook.

The entire balcony can be closed off to form a large sunny protected west-facing dining or sitting area. Architects call it a 'wintergarden'. In summer months, to make the most of beautiful weather so high in the sky, leave the lounge/balcony area open. (Open both the sliding glass walls that stretch the full width of the apartment.)

Stunning sunsets are common in Canberra, especially in autumn and spring. In winter months you may see snow on the mountains to the south. It's usually very pleasant on the 14th floor on summer evenings.

The Academy of Science and the National Film and Sound Archives buildings down below are often lit at night with changing colours. Every night you can watch the Telstra Tower on top of Black Mountain, with its changing coloured lights, especially set up for my guests who are enjoying a drink on the balcony!! Or enjoying a barista decaff coffee from downstairs in Ovolo Nishi hotel bar, just a quick elevator ride away.

The apartment stretches across the Nishi building, east to west. Morning sun spills into the bedroom. (I love it myself, but certainly close the blind if you prefer. But please note here, that's it not possible to block out 100% of incoming light) The apartment has ceiling-to-floor insulated blinds on the western side for blocking out late afternoon summer sun. The wall of insulated blinds also keeps the apartment warmer in winter.

Nishi is Japanese for 'west'. In Japanese style, the bedroom is close to the entrance, beside a small entrance area. This space is great for storing suitcases, etc. (But please store bicycles in the storage cage in the basement - padlock combo provided.) For getting dressed up and going out, there's a full-length mirror - 'At last!' says the traveller who's stayed in so many places without a mirror that's full length.

The bedroom has a queen bed, described in one review as 'particularly comfortable'. All linen, towels etc and tea towel are provided. They're laundered by Jackie my contract cleaner, or by me. The Actil First Line hotel-quality pure cotton sheets and pillowcases are hand-ironed at home. There's a range of pillows, from soft to hard, so you can choose your favourite.

The compact well-designed bathroom has walk-in shower with a choice of water pressure, and a high quality hairdryer. Shampoo, conditioner and bodywash are all provided, with several options for each, stored behind the mirror. There's body lotion and sunscreen.

The balcony has a patio table and chairs for eating outdoors or simply sitting with a drink to enjoy the brilliant view. There's also a modular lounge on the balcony. You can arrange the lounge chairs and table to suit yourself or make a long sofa to lie on and watch the sky. The apartment is so high in the sky that birds actually fly by, especially around sunset. So beautiful!

To keep the New Acton precinct a cultural mainstay in the national capital, all owners of apartments contribute to the purchase and upkeep of original artworks within the precinct. I've also invested in several original pieces in my apartment to support the ethos of New Acton and also, I hope, to bring pleasure to my guests. I change parts of the decor to suit the season and help the apartment stay harmonious with Nature's rhythms.

In the enormous Nishi basement, there's a busy city parking station, but you'll have your own dedicated space, lower down. Drive in, drive out. No payment or card required. If you're a long-stay guest, this may save you hundreds of dollars.

New Acton has an electric car charging station. The chargers have a Mennekes socket (type 2 , IEC 62196-2) and can supply up to 22kW of power, meaning an average charging time of 1 - 4 hours from empty to full for your EV (depending on the EV model).

Accesso per gli ospiti
The whole place is yours to enjoy. It has everything you need.
Early bag-drop and late bag pick-up are available in large secure basement storage cage.
Also ample storage for two bikes in the basement cage (not the apartment).

Altre cose da tenere a mente
My free dedicated parking spot in the Nishi basement will be available to you from 2pm on the day of your arrival, right through until 10am on the day you leave. There's a couple of floors of paid parking in the basement - you may like to get the Wilson Parking app - and paid parking in other parts of New Acton precinct.

If you need early bag-drop before the apartment's available, please mention this when you make your booking and I'll send you instructions about storing your bags in my locked cage in the basement. It's easy to find and access. Wilson Parking constantly monitors the security of the Nishi basement.

If you book for over a fortnight, I'll gift you a free clean.
There's a fully-equipped laundry in the apartment, with washer, detergent and very fancy Bosch dryer which won't steam up the apartment. Also a clothes-horse for fresh-air drying on the balcony. But if you want to pay for fresh linen and extra cleaning during your stay, this can easily be arranged.

To avoid (more) damage to the apartment walls, if you bring or hire bicycles, or other large sports equipment, please store them in the large cage in the basement, belonging to the apartment. The padlock combination will be given on request. Thanks.

Although there are Netflix, Foxtel Play and Spotify apps on the TV, you'll need to access your own accounts. Remember to bring your passwords. You can easily open YouTube, ABC iView and SBS on Demand from your phone or iPad.
For work or holiday, when you stay in my lovely city apartment in iconic Nishi New Acton you'll be so welcome. Free wifi and secure u'cover dedicated parking. Breakfast. Close to Parliament, ANG, Convention Centre and most main tourist places.

New Acton Canberra City, Territorio della Capitale Australiana, Australia

This stylish, well-equipped, comfortable apartment is under the same roof as Ovolo Nishi Hotel, Monster Restaurant, Palace Electric Cinema complex with eight theatres and popular bar, Makeshift cafe, Ethiopian lunch-place and hairdresser Roji. Also, the Nishi Saturday afternoon organic market and wine-tasting.

The main style of the New Acton city precinct is ‘retro chic’. Nishi is an iconic, international award-winning eco-building.

The bar at Ovolo Nishi on the ground floor is open late every night. There are two open fireplaces in the lounge area. Also in the small New Acton precinct is a supermarket, open every night until midnight. There are several options for breakfast/brunch and lunch and dinner. You can buy wine at Parlour bar and restaurant at 2/3 restaurant price and take it to the apartment. Over 60 restaurants deliver to Nishi via Deliveroo and Ubereats.

Also in New Acton, there’s Moccan and Grout, described as a ‘stylish nook with inventive meals cooked in an open kitchen, plus fair-trade espresso’. There’s a restaurant called Morning Glory that aims to make breakfast as memorable as dining at night. There's a family Italian restaurant with bar and garden courtyard, also Nishi Gallery. And a quirky bike repair shop. Rebel Rebel is a new restaurant, opened recently (Modern Australian fare)

Superb original artworks feature in all buildings and surrounds, with complementary landscaping, in the unique city precinct of New Acton. There’s a website that will bring you up to date with latest activities and events. Just google New Acton.

Bike hire is available in the precinct. (Hire at Peppers Gallery Hotel next door.) In summer you can hire paddleboats and 'picnic' boats with electric motors (hire at Kingston foreshore). There’s a well-equipped open air gym, a short walk along the lake, or pay for casual gym membership in Ovolo Nishi (through me, Michele, as a Nishi owner, by prior arrangement). Yoga available to all.

The lakeside walkway/bike and segway path will take you to Floriade (but only in Spring) Regatta Point tourist exhibition, Captain Cook Memorial Water Jet, Commonwealth Gardens, historic Blundells Cottage, the Centenary of Canberra National Playground, the National Carillon, the Centre for Christianity and Culture labyrinth, Kingston Foreshore with waterside cafes, restaurants and bars, Canberra Glassworks, Old Bus Depot weekly markets, the High Court, the National Gallery, the National Portrait Gallery, the National Rose Gardens at Old Parliament House, the Museum of Modern Democracy, Questacon and the National Library (with its exquisite Leonard French stained-glass windows).

Or walk or ride in the other direction to visit the National Museum, Black Mountain Peninsula picnic and swimming area, and the massive National Botanic Gardens on the slopes of Black Mountain, all native (and visible from the balcony, though hard to discern in the natural bushland on Black Mountain). Every night, Telstra Tower is lit with changing coloured lights, you can enjoy from the balcony. Often the Shine Dome and the National Film and Sound Archives are lit up as well.

Across the street from Nishi are the Australian National University, the famous Shine Dome or Australian Academy of Science (sometimes called ‘the Martian Embassy') and the Australian National Film and Sound Archives. Yes, all these attractions really are within easy walking or riding distance of the apartment! (Guests often report that they wished they'd booked some extra days!)

It's only a short drive to Parliament House, the Australian War Memorial, the National Zoo and Aquarium, embassies and consulates of many nations, the National Rock Garden, Telstra Tower on top of Black Mountain and the splendid National Arboretum (which you can also see from the balcony). The National Arboretum is our new national treasure and the latest 'go to' place that Canberrans enjoy taking their visitors to.

Hello, it's good to be in touch. My husband and I bought this excellent apartment in the international award-winning Nishi building, several years ago. It's a quiet secluded place for me to work away from home as a writer. Now it's in Airbnb and not rented out, I have ready access. This also means I get to share our beautiful place when I'm not there and from the reviews I've received, our guests enjoy the experience of staying there very much. I call our apartment High-in-the-Sky because that's what it feels like to me. Just wait till you see the view! It's clear across to the mountains. It's so high in the sky that birds actually fly by, especially around sunset. You could spend many happy hours, just sitting on the balcony, gazing at the view. At night the Telstra Tower atop Black Mountain will put on a display for you. I live with my husband less than fifteen minutes away in our nice house in our beautiful garden. I'm self-employed. My time is flexible. I can be available to help our guests at any time I'm needed. I hope you come to stay.

You’re hiring the entire apartment so there's no live-in interaction but as my guest, you can phone or message me at any time, day or night, if you have a problem. I live about twelve minutes away and I'll be happy to go straight to Nishi if we can't work things out in a phonecall.
