My family and I (Will) have lived in the hamlet of Stuyvesant Falls since 2004, moving from Brooklyn. We own sheep, chickens and ponies (plus many dogs and a few cats). We have bikes, canoes, inner tubes, ice skates, cross country skis and kayaks: we’d be happy to loan items out, but we need to plan in advance.
Street parking.

Bikes:
If I loan you a bike you use it at your own risk. I can try to get some bikes to you. There is also a great bike shop that rents bikes right around the corner. Ron at Velo Domestique Bicycle Shop, 19 Center St, Chatham, NY (PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN)… bike rides behind the high school, etc.

Right next door is a new very good if a bit pricey cafe

He has a map of routes. I would also suggest biking to Ooms Pond, Borden Pond and Crellin Town Park. The town park has a woods in the back along a nice creek. Pond for swimming. All sports. Vegetable garden. Also, you can bike on Shufelt Road, Highland Road… very rural right outside the village.

Culture right in village or very close (walk?):
McHayden Theater - Like musicals?
Crandall Movie Theater-- I LOVE THIS THEATER! The way it should be!!!
PS 21: live performances
Chatham Public Library 11 Woodbridge Ave Chatham, NY 12037: fast internet and events
Morris Memorial across the street (pool tables, inside basketball)
Gallery

Restaurants and bars and stores near by (walk or bike):
Friday evening farmers market near Kinderhook Bank (the old train station),
Chatham, right next door
Hudson, Saturdays 9 – 1; N 6th St, Hudson, NY 12534
Kinderhook, Saturdays, 10 – 1; Village center
The Blue Plate, sometimes events, an institution… local ingredients, $$$
Pizza Den isn’t bad pizza
That Asian style lunch counter that used to be where Ralph’s was… not bad for lunch
Destino is bar food Mexican but it’s pretty good
The new bagel store seems good
Our Daily Bread has two spots, the close one gluten free and the farther one with gluten and a big sit down restaurant. I like them both. Solid lunch or breakfast.
The People’s Pub or Chatham brewery: walk to beer
The African boutique is nice! Fahari Bazaar…
Two bookstores
Chatham Real Food Market Co-Op -- 15 Church St, Chatham, NY 12037 -- Recommended!
The Berry Farm -- Recommended! (have to drive) LOCAL PRODUCE, flowers, their own fruit

A bit further afield, but in about 40 minutes:

Local towns: Hudson is a city of extremes, with lots of investment, and housing projects. The media like to write about it. The occasional rock star, etc., plus tons of local life and cool stuff, as below. The town of Chatham is usual for being normal. Some of the Massachusetts towns are exceedingly fancy, some of the New York towns can be run down, other towns, like Hudson, are unique, but Chatham is just nice, normal, with plenty of great stuff without being too perfect and not expensive without being rundown and shabby. My opinion, of course. Plus, it’s a rural town with lots of city people on summer weekends. Kinderhook/Valatie neighborhood includes a lot of people who commute to Albany every day, changing the culture of the town. Philmont is close to the Waldorf School Hawthorne Valley and while the Rudolf Steiner/Anthroposophical philosophy is not everyone’s cup of tea, that community, centered in and around Philmont, makes the village is something special in America, although the casual visitor might not realize. The world’s most beautiful farm is there (well maybe that’s an exaggeration) but it’s a real working farm and they are pretty busy, Threshold. The roads back behind High Falls are gorgeous. Copake, Hillsdale, etc. etc. Greenport is kind of a strip mall and not a pretty one.

Stuyvesant Landing: the cafe restaurant is great with stunning views. Nutten Hook/Ice House is historic and trails and canoeing is good. If you want to jump out of the canoe, I would suggest the Stockport Creek, also very near by.

Hudson has an Amtrak station, many antique shops, restaurants, the Hudson Opera House, TSL, Basilica Industria, Club Helsinki, Spotty Dog Books and Bar. I like the cruelty-free diner with excellent local meat, Grazin’ Acres, with the cows from Kinderhook Farm on your way to Chatham, back roads. Swoon and Crimson Sparrow are great for fine dining -- and it gets finer in Hudson, Farmer and Sons and Fish and Game -- or good pizza a Baba Louies (a lot less fine, but still fine). Farmer’s market.

Chatham has McCadden theater and PS 21 and a great movie theater (beautiful 1920s restored). The Pub has new owners. The brewery, Chatham beer, is great. Ron’s bike shop it top notch. The town park Crellin has a pond you can swim in and trails next to a creek, in addition to all sports, tennis, skateboard, playgrounds. You should also go to Borden Pond to walk around and Ooms Pond is stunning.

Kinderhook. Farmer’s market. The Flammerie is nice as a restaurant. The cafe in the center of town is good with ice cream.

Winter: Fire is obviously serious business! The wood stove must be operated with great care, please. Never remove anything from the stove (ashes, wood, etc). We’ll do that. Put only wood and paper in there. Always make sure the doors are securely closed when you go to bed or out of the house. Try the handle out before starting the fire, when it’s cold, wiggle it and see if you can securely close the doors. If you want to have the doors open to look at the fire, put up the screen and keep an eye out for anything falling out of the stove. There is a fire extinguish on the mantle behind the stove. Thank you.

Chatham.Haus is in the dead center of the village of Chatham. The village is so small, there are also very country roads right around the corner that you can get to on foot. It's a very quiet neighborhood but there are quite a few choices in terms of restaurants just a few steps away.

Hi. Family with four kids on a farm in upstate NY, we rent out several places. My wife is a psychologist, Aenne, co-host with myself. I own a country getaway for city dogs. You can get a sense of the area, perhaps, from Under Two Maples. Hope you can come up and explore beautiful Columbia County. Also, art in the houses, including Ulrike Grannis, paper artist, and my stuff in a book called M.O.G.E.
