Stroud is on the very edge of the Cotswolds. There are delightful historic stone villages within a few miles in the surrounding hills, most notably Painswick, Minchinhampton and Bisley.
Not far away is Berkeley Castle and the Wildlife and Wetlands Trust's Slimbridge Centre.
Cheltenham and Gloucester with its splendid cathedral, are easily accessed by bus: each merits at least a day's visit.
Dramatic views from the tops of several key nearby locations stretch southwards towards Bristol, northwards to Gloucester and across the wide open spaces of the Severn Vale with the River Severn, to the Forest of Dean with Wales in the distance.
Numerous footpaths allow exploration of the Five Valleys and their surrounding hills.
The Stroudwater restoration project has opened up several miles of canalside walks.
Stroud District has a rich geological, archaeological and industrial history (well illuminated in its excellent local museum – the Museum in the Park).
Historically the area has been famous since the 17th century for the production of bright-coloured, felted Stroud cloth (military reds, billiard-table green, casino navy, tennis-ball yellow); also for many industrial inventions, including Edwin Beard Budding's lawnmover and adjustable spanner.
Today the Stroud area is known for its creative, artistic, environmentally concerned and alternative communities, also its innovative industries.
On Saturdays, Stroud's celebrated Farmers Market makes the town centre buzz.

Within a mile of my house are: Leisure Centre with indoor and open-air swimming pools; surrounding park with play equipment, skate-board area, lake and small 19th-century arboretum. Also the very popular, family-friendly Museum in the Park, that has a delightful, recently restored walled garden and excellent temporary exhibition gallery with programme of related activities.

There's a choice of good, reasonably-priced restaurants and pubs in the area: especially recommend The Woolpack at Slad (with its Laurie Lee associations), the Bell Inn at Selsley and Royal Oak in the centre of Painswick. Stroud itself has numerous good cafes, including the world's first totally organic one.

Five things I can't live without: family (three generations), friends, good neighbours, books, music (classical, opera). Travel: many places in the past, eg USA, Canada, Eastern Europe, China, Australia, India, Hong Kong; more recently, mainly Europe, especially France and Ireland. Extensive knowledge of home area (Gloucestershire and South West England), many other parts of England, also Scotland and parts of Wales. I much enjoy having AirBnB guests, and sharing my knowledge of my locality. Have had my nearby allotment for over 30 years – it's now a very productive mini orchard!
