Thornythwaite Farm is a cosy smallholding tucked into the foot of the fells above Ullswater lake. We're lucky enough to have space to work and play in this beautiful place, and for our growing menagerie of hens, ducks, sheep and bees. The fells are on our doorstep with the lake a 5 minute drive down into the valley and Keswick and Penrith are both easily reached in quarter of an hour. Dockray is a 5 minute walk down the road and is home to The Royal hotel which serves great food all day.

Lo spazio
Cosy en-suite bedroom.

Accesso per gli ospiti
Guests have access to the en-suite room via the side entrance of the house. Breakfast is served in the living room with views over Gowbarrow Fell. There is ample off road parking near the farmhouse.

Altre cose da tenere a mente
We are delighted to welcome guests back to Thornythwaite Farm. Just to reassure you that we are taking measures to protect our guests and ourselves. As well as meticulously cleaning we are also sanitising all surfaces and handles etc to the highest standard.
In order to respect social distancing and minimise contact we have decided not to serve cooked breakfasts for the time being. We will still provide a hearty breakfast of homemade granola, muesli, fresh fruit, yoghurt, Victoria's renowned homemade organic sourdough bread/toast, butter and jams, fruit juice, tea and coffee. We can leave this in the dining room for you at a time agreed. All served with a view of our local fell, Gowbarrow. If you have a special dietary requirement please just ask. Our food is sourced ethically, sustainably and organically wherever possible and all our cleaning products are environmentally friendly.

The farm stands alone in its own land, surrounded by fields but with easy access to the road and local footpaths. It is a quiet and peaceful location, lots of birdsong and lovely views. There is the 400 year old Matterdale Church just across the road and a smattering of five neighbouring houses. The village of Dockray is a 7 minute walk away along a footpath which follows the road where The Royal Hotel serves food and drink.
Thornythwaite Farm is a great location, nestled in the hills in the valley of Matterdale, close to lake Ullswater and great for walks. It is a lovely hour’s walk through woodland and past the water falls (Aira Force) to the lake where boats (the Ullswater Steamers) make trips to various points around the lake including Pooley Bridge . There are trails along the lake as well as walks up into the hills. There is a Sailing centre in Glenridding for boat hire.

We (Victoria, Jim and our four children) moved to Thornythwaite Farm in December 2015 through the flood waters and snow of Storm Desmond. Obviously a sign of things to come as a few weeks later Jim was made redundant out of the blue and the real adventures began! After many deep breaths we decided to work for ourselves and to try to make a living at Thornythwaite. Setting up a bedroom for guests through Airbnb was the first part of the jigsaw with our first guests arriving from Israel in October 2016 and we have not looked back since. On top of looking after our guests and keeping up with a busy family, Victoria also childminds during the week. In any spare time her great aspiration is to have a productive kitchen garden, if she can tear herself away from her beloved knitting needles! After a lifetime of soul searching Jim’s currently living his version of the dream, building a new timber barn and ‘helping’ our builders to create holiday cottages from the old stone barn at the end of our track. We are also lucky enough to have a few fields around the house which are home to our middle son’s flock of seventy Swaledale sheep, which all adds to the fun during lambing in April. We take great pride in our Airbnb but it is very much part of our home; there are usually wellies and buckets in the porch and chickens and ducks wandering around. As mentioned, there is building work going on to convert the barns at the other end of the track but this doesn’t affect the house at all and won’t interfere with your stay.

Durante il tuo soggiorno
We really enjoy hosting our guests. What began as a needs-must situation quickly became a way of life that we love. It’s great meeting people, sharing their stories and inspiration and a pleasure to create a comfortable space for people to feel at home. We enjoy a simple, rural way of life and while it’s difficult to travel with the animals and general farm life, we enjoy ‘travelling’ through our guests - the world comes to us!
