Ottima posizione
Il 100% degli ospiti recenti ha valutato la posizione con 5 stelle.
Spacious bright studio right in the historical downtown grid of Kyoto, minutes from Shijo-Karasuma subway and Hankyu train station, a short walk to Kyoto main station. Step out onto lively narrow streets full of shops, restaurants, cafes, and temples and then return home to a calm oasis for a quiet comfortable stay.

Minimum 1-month stay. Standard Japanese rental contract required. Please contact me before booking to discuss! **Shorter stay possible for November 2019.***

Lo spazio
This bright comfortable studio (22 square meters + narrow balcony) has air conditioning/heating, a new double bed, small kitchen for hot drinks and simple meals (mini-refrigerator, electric kettle, IH hot plate), eating/writing area, sofa, shower/bath, and a closet with a bit of storage. There is also a single futon for those who wish to sleep separately. We have deliberately tried to keep the furnishing spare for maximum light and space. The apartment includes a washing machine to wash clothes, and a rack to dry them inside or on the balcony. There is also a neighborhood laundromat for large-scale drying.
The apartment is located off-street, with virtually no traffic/street noise. Sliding glass doors open onto a balcony overlooking tiled rooftops.
Remaining 2019 availability includes the month of November. March aside, there is full availability in 2020. Our preference is for bookings that roughly begin at the start of the calendar month, although there is some flexibility, especially if your booking is significantly longer than one month.
For those looking for more room and a traditional alternative, we also have a house on the river in northern Kyoto (wood, tatami, garden, traditional design), available from December. For minimalists, we have a very small apartment downtown suited for single occupancy, available immediately.

Altri motivi | Starting 2018, we only do 30-day minimum bookings. Tenants complete a Japanese 10-page lease contract, submitted to our building association. On June 2, airbnb notified me that we do not need a registration number because we only rent long term.

Guests at the nearby 5-star Princess Nikko Hotel love this neighborhood, and so do we. Although we are close to the main artery of Karasuma, our narrow one-way street is surprisingly quiet. The neighborhood is distinctive for its balanced mix of residential housing and small businesses, and of old and new. Many of the apartments are modern, but they are built according to the historical city plot structure of urban Kyoto, narrow but deep. There is an important neighborhood temple adjacent to our street. Coffee shops (including Starbucks), convenience stores, and cheap places to eat line Karasuma, and there are countless other restaurants and cafes on the side streets, a fair number of them in traditional wooden machiya.
West of Karasuma, within minutes you enter a nearly untouched residential district. Heading east, the famous Nishiki 錦市場 pedestrian shopping areas is nearby, and it leads into Teramachi 寺町 shopping arcade. Nishiki has many offerings for tourists, with food stalls and traditional and contemporary goods, while Teramachi is a modern shopping district. Tokyu Hands, Loft, Louis Vuitton, and Daimaru and Takashimaya department stores are a short walk away, on Shijodori. (For easy dining options, with many plastic food displays to guide you, we recommend the restaurant floors at the top of Daimaru and Takashimaya, very popular with Japanese. There are also busy food courts in the basement floors. Ayanokoji dori, one major block south of Shijo, also has many offerings, both traditional and modern.)
A few minutes further east down Shijo takes you to the Kamogawa river, which is an attraction in itself; the Gion district is across the bridge. Kiyomizudera is approximately a half-hour walk, up busy Gojo.

I am a professor of American literature, and my partner and I have hosted guests in Kyoto for the past 5 years. My top interests are reading books, riding bikes, studying languages, and traveling, preferably doing all four at the same time.
