Cosa farete

Beautiful bikes, beautiful rides, and all our neighborhood secrets. On our tours we'll smell the roses, taste the doughnuts, ride across the bridges, and along the rivers; it's the best way to experience the diversity of culture, art, poetry, nature, parks and neighborhoods in Portland.

We believe it's all about the bike ride! Our approach is to spend more time riding, but lots of time stopping at gardens, art collectives, sculptures and beaches. We start in the inner Eastside neighborhoods, where we will fit you for an easy-to-ride bike and helmet, ready for a sweet 9-11 mile ride.

You'll visit a total of five of the city's quadrants, ride over two bridges, and along the Willamette River. We'll visit a number of almost-secret beaches, read poetry written in the sidewalks and rocks, see public art of every shape, color and texture. And have you tried some of the city's best doughnuts? (And no, we don't mean Voodoo.)

Portland is not just a city of seamless bicycle infrastructure and friendly relations between cyclists and motorists, but also a city of poets. Literally and figuratively, our bike ride is a poem--a series of poems--to our city. We'll read poetry written on murals, in sidewalks, and carved in rocks. There is, too, the whirling poetry of wheels on pavement, the sweet suspension of effort that is cycling on the quiet streets and pathways in this place we love.

I'm Sarah Gilbert, co-founder of Around Portland Tours and together with partners and guides Edwin, Madi, Jonathan, Jeri and Evan will host the experiences.

See what we do on Instagram: @aroundportlandtours

I'm a published writer of essays and professional storyteller, and each of the narratives around which our tours are based was a collaboration between us, writers and route designers, as a movable narrative, what we call place-based storytelling.

When we create a ride, it is one we as story creators develop out of the places we know intimately and love so well we are bursting to share them; and also includes elements that together make up not just the story of Portland, but also the beauty of biking in what one guest called "the most pleasant urban cycling experience" there is.

Dove ti troverai

We start at our shop at Around Portland Tours, 833 SE Main #120, and fit you for the bicycle & helmet perfect for you.

We head into a pretty residential neighborhood, to our favorite rose garden, into an art-heavy industrial district, across the sexy Tilikum Bridge, and onto Portland's waterfront. From there, it's a visit to Old Town/Chinatown, and along the river, before we head over another bridge back to our shop.

Great way to familiarize yourself with Portland, even if you don’t bike, the level of difficulty is low and a great way to get around the city. Maddie was very friendly and knew her stuff. Next time I go to Portland I will definitely do this tour again and bring my friends

This experience was amazing. You will not be disappointed. Madi knew so much about Portland and really made us feel special. I loved how she kept looking back for me to make sure I was OK (Im in general a spazz and have a fear of heights and bridges!) and helped me feel like an expert on my bike. Her vibe was everything and it just made the experience so much better. You definitely get your money’s worth. You dont feel rushed and before you know it, the 11 mile ride is over! Don’t sleep on this experience- just do it!

Madi was our tour guide and she was absolutely wonderful, knowledgeable, and had the best and bubbly personality. It was just my wife and I so it made it more personal. She was very attentive and genuinely cared about my wife who was a little hesitant of the activity but she made sure she was comfortable during the whole process which meant a lot to me. This is a great experience that lets you see all the quadrants of Portland, what did city has to offer, and a chance to get some great donuts. I’m looking forward to doing this again in the future with my son.

Altri consigli

Portland mornings are cool -- bring layers! We have raingear to borrow; or (Sept - June) bring your favorite rainjacket. We wear everyday clothes to ride our bikes, but it's easier in comfortable footwear, with no long skirts or wide legged pants. Minimal bike experience is ok; none, is not.
