I teach yoga to beginners as well as established yoga practitioners. There are 1 hour and 1.5 hour classes. There are four unique aspects of the lyengar system by which it can be distinguished from other systems of yoga. 1. The first is the precision of alignment in the asana practice; correct body alignment not only minimises the possibility of injuries, but also ensures steady development of balance, coordination and improvement of posture. 2. The second aspect is the sequencing. Sequencing helps you obtain greater penetration and understanding. 3. The third aspect of lyengar yoga is the timing. Poses are held longer to allow for attention to precise alignment and for the benefits of the asana to penetrate. In addition, holding poses builds core strength and endurance. 4. The fourth aspect is the use of equipment/props. BKS Iyengar is perhaps best known for his innovative use of very simple aids, including wooden blocks, foams, belts, chairs, blankets and bolsters, which allow everyone to benefit no matter their age or physical disabilities in a safe and effective manner. These four aspects of the lyengar system are all integrated and develop strength and endurance, improve posture and concentration in addition to increasing flexibility and quietening the mind to promote well-being.

Hi, I am Monique, I am a certified Iyengar Yoga teacher and have been teaching since 2009. I am based in East London, South Africa, where I teach yoga classes in a beautiful studio. I host weekend yoga retreats three times a year at King's Lodge Hotel, which is a sanctuary nestled in a beautiful park-like garden in the Hogsback Mountain Village, famous for its forests, waterfalls, clear mountain streams, gentle forest walks and mists. I love sharing my passion for yoga and due to the use of props, this style of yoga is accessible to all. I was born in the Netherlands and moved to South Africa at the age of 22. I have practised Iyengar yoga since 1997 and became a certified Iyengar Yoga teacher in 2009. In 2010 I practised at the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Yoga Institute (RIMYI) in Pune.
