The best way to explore a country is with your taste-buds!

Our 'Cheese School' takes place in our 1930's chambre d'hote in the beautiful Livradois Mountains and forests. Without leaving the kitchen table, we take you on a journey around the famous Auvergne 'Route des Fromages' (saving you a several day road trip!), tasting and discussing the Auvergne's 5 AOP cheeses and, as a bonus, lesser-know local artisan cheeses.
Taste different milk types - goat, cow and sheep, raw milk versus pasteurised, fresh cheese alongside mature. Immerse yourself in French food culture with myths and legends behind each cheese. Discover how to pair different styles with wines, beers, ciders or soft drinks and try interesting new accompaniments. Learn what to look for when buying cheese, how best to store, cut and present your cheeseboard for personal pleasure or parties alike.
Our cheese tastings are in English, include accompaniments, drinks and could quite happily replace lunch or supper! And, if like us, you fall in love with the region's produce, we'll happily assist you to 'meet the maker' and share our favourite markets and 'secret' artisan producers.

I am an award winning chef, food writer and broadcaster, with a passion for local food and an obsession with cheese. With my husband (an award winning restaurateur with over 20 years of experience pairing wine, beer, spirit and soft drinks with diverse menus and foods) we live in the Auvergne, possibly the most famous region in France for cheese. Together, we have trained hundreds of hospitality professionals (as well as a few 'normal' people!) in the art of cheese tasting, pairing, handling and presentation. La maison de Nigel et Samantha est un peu au milieu de nulle part mais la vie est magnifique et les hôtes sont charmants. Samantha à très bien préparé le repas avec une dégustation réfléchie et Nigel a bien accordé les vins avec les fromages.

Sam & Nigel were great. Very informed and passionate about all things Livradois-Forez. The cheese was presented in a succinct fashion, not random, but perfectly structured which didn't overwhelm a newbie to cheese like myself. Added bonus of accompanying drinks and snacks. Would definitely recommend to anyone in the area.

I wanted to do this for a long time and until today it wasn't the right moment. I've found this experience just from curiosity, when a looked around my place, Clermont Ferrand on Airbnb Experiences. We were waiting to gather a special group of friends to do it. Finally the friends came and we did it. And Gosh! What a beautiful trip thru the cheese world! How nice this guys are! We think we just made new friends. Sam really knows a lot about the french cheese, she is very passionate and professional. She makes a really good team with Nigel from who we learned also many things. The place is situated in Parc Livradois Forez, a little piece of Heaven. Definitely you must do this, even the french people have many things to learn from them. We will do it again for sure, again and again. Best cheese region with best people to learn from.

Expérience recommandée aux étrangers car la dégustation est tenue par un couple d'anglais (bravo à Sam pour son français!) Et pour ceux qui ont un long séjour celà permettra d acheter directement au producteur 😁

Exceptional experience, hard to put into words- warm homely atmosphere and hospitality, broad range of flavors in touch, odor, variety of cheese, drink, homemade cakes and side dishes carefully chosen and arranged- this experience blew our minds. Don’t miss it! Sam and Nigel are true experts in food and area and with their charming hostile way they do not only tell a lot about cheese and Lokal products but give you a true experience what makes the Auvergne a remarkable place. Thanks you soooo much!!!
