Carolyn, Sam and Christine of DC Design Tours are three history buff architecture nerds with a passion for story telling!

Carolyn is a former architect and life-long lover of all things brick and mortar. She prefers to talk about buildings than draw them. The District has been her home since 2006, and when not guiding, you can find her counting columns at the National Building Museum (there are 152) and traipsing through Rock Creek National Park.

Sam is an enthusiast for architectural design, history, and talking a mile a minute. Originally from the Bluegrass State, he's a full fledged Washingtonian now.

We’ll begin in the Great Hall of Union Station. This crossroads of Presidents, diplomats, and politicians has seen drastic change, from inaugurations, to World Wars, and even a runaway train! We’ll proceed to the steps of the Supreme Court, then across the street to the Library of Congress before heading down Capitol Hill for a gorgeous front and center view of the United States Capitol Building.

The tour was OK. We spent a lot of time in union station and most of the tour walking 15-20 min to the capitol building with a brief stop at congress in between. To her credit, I believe many things were closed to the public due to COVID. But, couldn’t help but feel like there should have been more once it ended. I thought the storytelling was great and appreciated the photos. Our tour guide was an architect and built some of the structures so that was awesome. However, when she mentioned that slaves built the capitol …she called it “ironic”. But when discussing not being able to see her favorite Christmas tree in DC due to Black Lives Matter activists, she said she was “very disappointed”, which made me feel like she was more saddened by her Christmas tree experience than enslaved peoples building the capitol. That soured the tour for me a bit.

Loved the tour. Sam, our tour guide. was knowledgeable, fun, and high energy. And also actually knew facts and didn’t just go for urban legends. It’s a great tour to get to learn more about a few key buildings that I would have probably missed, like Union station and Supreme Court. Highly recommend iy
