Cosa farete

During this experience you will discover an incredible story of love, survival and the creative spirit. As we tour their home we will share the story of Duldigs' remarkable escape from Vienna in 1938, their journey via Switzlerland then to Singapore and eventually their internment at Tatura, Victoria, as enemy aliens! This is a rare opportunity to glimpse life as it was several decades ago. Each room contains art and furniture from their time in Vienna. The main studio is full of Karl's sculptures in both clay, marble and bronze. You will hear about Slawa's amazing invention of the foldable umbrella and how she was forced to sell her patent after her daring escape form Vienna. After a traditional Viennese morning tea of coffee and cake we will take you into the workshop and Stefan, our Artist In Residence, will teach you how to make an object with clay. This is a fun aspect of the day where everyone can get their hands wet with clay and indulge their creative urges! Stefan was a student of Karl's and can tell you how Karl made his sculptures.

I'm Jenny Port and I am the Director of Duldig Studio museum + sculpture garden. Our Tour Guides, and I, will help you discover this wonderful museum that tells a remarkable story of grit, daring and luck. It reminds us that the drive to innovate and to create is something that just cannot be extinguished, even during war. These two artists, Slawa who was a painter & inventor and Karl, a sculptor, kept their wits and their creative spirits alive, despite the horrors and many challenges that faced them after Germany annexed Austria in 1938.

Duldig Studio museum + sculpture garden

A little bit of Vienna in Melbourne! Duldig Studio is the former home and studio of sculptor Karl Duldig (1902-1986) and his wife - artist and inventor Slawa Horowitz-Duldig (1901-1975). Having escaped Vienna (Austria) in 1938, they came to Australia.
