This tour is mostly demonstration and instruction. If you would like to be involved in making a piece, please have a look at my Ornament Making Tour. I will have a log cut into blanks for bowls and/or spindle blanks when you arrive. If the weather is good I will show you where I cut the wood and how I chose where to cut. I will explain about wood selection methods and the do's and don'ts. Common questions I get are: Where in the tree do bowls come from? How are they cut into their rough shape? How is the wood seasoned? How do you stop the wood cracking? The answers sometimes surprise people. Hopefully I will answer any questions sufficiently and I will then demonstrate the process of how I turn a greenwood bowl or spindle blank. Once completed I will show you how the blanks are sealed and prepared for the drying process. I use professional machines and tools so you will be getting a top notch view into a woodturner's world. You will be shown around active woodworking workshops so there will be sawdust and woodshavings everywhere. I have air filters working in the background which take some of the particulates out of the air but If you are allergic to wood dust then this might not be for you. The tour and demonstration should take approximately one and a half hours. Hopefully there will be an opportunity to view some finished pieces afterwards for a few minutes
Il tuo host
I am a member of the Design & Crafts Council of Ireland and the Original Kerry Craft group. I have been turning since 1996 and became a professional in 2015. I specialize in rescuing fallen Irish Hardwood, then processing it into rough form for drying and then finishing it as something beautiful with a unique story. My style of turning suits my personality. I get bored of repetition and I like to go with the flow. When I see an interesting grain pattern emerge on the lathe I try to feature it as much as possible. I don't like using guides or templates. Teaching is the next logical progression for me. It took years for me to hone my craft and that is something that can be shared and passed on. I also like to talk about the importance of responsible and sustainable hardwood tree management.

Possono partecipare fino a 6 ospiti a partire dai 15 anni. No experience is necessary. I will be handling all the tools and wood. At the end of the tour I will try to set up a piece so that each individual can try to turn a little.
Each class that I teach brings something different to the experience. Sometimes people ask more questions about a particular aspect of the tour which changes the time spent on each stage. I welcome questions and I don't mind altering the tour if it makes it more interesting and enjoyable for you.
