Let's hike the 5th highest peak in Texas! A local Texas State Park ranger will be your trusted guide. Outside of rare Open Days, this is your only chance to hike the majestic and rugged Mount Livermore, elevation 8378'. The hike is a steep & strenuous 7 miles round trip, with 2200 feet gained, taking hikers around 5-6 hours on average. We'll meet at the McIvor Conservation Center at the Davis Mountains Preserve, 23 miles west of Fort Davis. From there we'll drive 5 miles to the trailhead for Mount Livermore (high clearance vehicle required). On our hike up we'll be sure to take plenty of breaks with breath-taking views. Reaching the top requires a class 3-4 scramble involving 4 points of contact (using your hands) on the rock. On the summit, you'll find yourself on top of a unique "sky island" overlooking vast ocean-like expanses of the Chihuahuan Desert far below. Clear days offer views of Mexico, Marfa, Big Bend's Chisos Mountains, and the Guadalupe Mountains, 100+ miles away. After resting, hydrating, snacking, taking photos and enjoying endless views at the top, we'll begin our journey down. This challenging climb is equal to 220 flights of stairs over 3.5 miles, but it's always worth it. Get ready to fall in love with the Davis Mountains. *$20 of each guest's booking goes to the Davis Mountains Preserve, owned by the Nature Conservancy of Texas.
